Funchal tour guides?

We'll have one day in Funchal and would like to make the most of it. Has anyone had experience with a tour guide/driver? Any recommendations on sights? Thanks!

We actually have a driver/guide that we can recommend even though we were not able to use him. His name is Ricardo Costa, and we had him booked for a tour when we were in Funchal in February. Unfortunately, he had car trouble the morning of our tour and was delayed. We did not know of the problem because we did not have our cell phone on, but Ricardo called our cell and left a message (expensive for him since he was calling the U.S.). We actually met up with him at one of the stops on the tour (we booked a different driver after about 45 minutes since we didn't know he was on his way). He apoligized profusely, explaining the situation. In addition, after we were home he emailed us, again apologizing and hoping that he had done nothing to mar our stay in Funchal (he didn't...Funchal is a magical place).
