sick from the voyager may 15th?

Recommended Posts

Sorry you had a problem and glad you are better. I know my first reaction was that you wanted ammunition to complain to the cruise line about the cruise, glad that wasn't the case. And it never ceases to amaze me when people go to crowded places and are surprised they get sick and want to blame it on the destination, glad that's not the case either. I hear the complaint about theme parks, air lines, cruises, etc not uncommonly. There are things one can do to minimize the risk but not take it away. In this situation is usually is viral, esp Norwalk or similar or Rotavirus. True food poisoning is pretty rare and usually definable.

No, I wasnt looking for compensation. I just thought it would be wise to advise them since there were so many cases so they could do what needed to be done. I am sure they steralize it but there are so many people onboard that one person could come on to an already clean ship with a viral infection and it could spread so fast. I dont blame the cruise line at all.

I hope everyone is on the road to recovery. Since most pax didn't get sick until Thursday or Friday, I wonder if someone brought it onboard from somewhere in Bermuda? It was the first sailing there. It's also conceivable that someone embarking had the "bug" and didn't show symptoms until a few days later. Since it was a 5 night cruise, that may be the case.

I do hope RCCL takes appropriate action in disinfecting the ship; especially for the pax now on the ship. We sailed last August and will be on next August. No illness we were aware of last year- just Frances. There are some areas that are always crowded (Promenade during parade, pools on sea days...). I can see how it spread quickly! Keep us posted!

Voyagerclassfan: did you read the beginning of this thread? A few posters WERE pretty rude to the OP, who was still sick when she posted, and those kind of replies ARE uncalled for on these boards.

Call me sensitive, but I don't think people should be joking with someone if they are still sick.

Hi everyone,

I called the CDC today to follow up on my email. The lady there was very nice. She said the the Voyager had reported 45 ill on that last day but I told her that most of us were busy getting off the ship to go home and didn't report it. They will follow up with this definitely.

To add to Dorothy's message, the CDC called me back as well.

The gentleman said the current cruisers got sick as well and RCCL has been doing everything they are supposed to do-and have been doing so since Weds. of our 5/15 trip-which the gentleman said was well before the deadlines.

The CDC is doing an investigation and they think it was/is norovirus, but cannot confirm until tests are performed.

They will answer any questions we have.

Hope everyone is continuing to feel better.

It still amazes me that my mom did not get it. Her and I shared a cabin and were together the entire trip. She was very lucky.

Thanks!

PCUR-yes, that was my original point. I thought they were extremely rude to the OP. They lashed out at her and it was uncalled for. People are ridiculous on these boards when they get attacked. Its nuts. I was actually one of the ones who got sick as well so I was able to relate to the OP...:)

DeanD -- Exactly why is gathering ammunition to complain to the cruise line a bad thing? What am I missing? RCI should know what happened. Good grief! Everyone affected by the virus should just suffer in silence????

I didn't say it was a bad thing though if it applied in this situation, I think it would be off base. The reality is that people get sick when they are in crowded situations with strangers and it happens all the time. Even if every single person on that cruise got sick, it would likely not be RCCL's fault. It seems people always want to blame someone when something happens. They frequently ignore the realities of life, like bugs in hotel rooms in FL or people share viruses on cruises. The only true way to protect yourself is to stay away, period. There are things you can do to decrease the risk like "don't drink the water", hand washing, etc. And it's OK to let RCCL know but to ask for or expect compensation in any way is unreasonable in most of these types of situations. It's just like your insurance carrier tells you, never admit guilt even if it's obviously your fault.

In reading this thread, the pax on this cruise are not asking for any compensation. They are asking for RCCL to disinfect the ship, if indeed, it's a Norovirus outbreak. I'm all for that. They are also concerned for the current pax on the Voyager- did they get sick or was it "nipped in the bud". There is another thread of pax leaving this Sunday on the Voyager and they are nervous that the cruise may be delayed or in some cases, cancelled.

By sharing information here, people can be better informed and can plan ahead.

Again- I hope everyone is back to "normal", whatever that means.

My niece started vomiting in the wee hours of the morning on 5/15. We all came down to the LaScala to wait to disembark...and my sister in law and niece were planted close the the bathroom. My niece couldn't stop vomiting and finally asked to see a doctor. She was taken by wheelchair to the ships doctor and given the "infamous" shot, which made her very drowsy. Unfortunately, it didn't stop the vomiting immediately, and she vomited several times along the way back to the LaScala. My brother advised ships personnel in the area that she was still throwing up, and the affected areas needed to be cleaned up. He said they didn't seem too concerned. My niece eventually ran a temperature Sunday evening and slept that day away.

I have several concerns regarding this. Even though ships personnel were aware that my niece was sick, there was no effort to provide her a comfortable place to wait to disembark; not the cabin or a separate area from the passengers. Not even when she was at the ship's doctor was this offered! She threw up in the crowded bathroom trashcan, toilet and a room trashcan that a passenger still occupying their cabin on deck 3 offered her. She dozed on the floor outside the staterooms on deck 3 near the ladies restroom. I wonder if these areas were cleaned thoroughly after we disembarked, to prevent possible illness in the Bermuda passengers and crew members. I also wonder why they didn't make an attempt to keep her separated from the rest of the passengers and crew, as a preventative measure.

I will say that many passengers were very understanding and offered what help they could to my brother, sister in law and niece. I only wish RCI would have extended some small courtesy to them; after all the cruise isn't over until we are OFF the ship! I would love the see anyone who is ill on disembarkation day be offered extended use of their cabin (ideally) or at least a private area away from the crowd with separate bathroom facilities (for everyone's sake)!

No one in our party was aware of any shipboard illness during the cruise.

They say alcohol kills most viruses....guess thats why my group NEVER has gotten sick like that

Wiz - it was probably your niece (about 14-16yrs old) that ran past me in the La Scala with her mom close behind her trying to get her through the crowd of people that were coming from the opp direction. They never did move even though she had her hand over her mouth getting ready to puke ( I noticed right away and moved) until the woman behind her finally said shes going to throw up please move...that got em moving. Honestly that was the only person I saw sick on the May 7th cruise and it was the last morning and I figured it was just sea sickness from the night before or she just had a regular stomach thing. I didnt see anyone else sick....thank God.

The fact that there was a bunch of little brats under age 6 and 7 in the hot tub with floaties and tubes didnt help either. I was so grossed out by the hot tubs I refused to go near them(my cousins made me pose for a pic in one of them with them but I got right out in 5 seconds flat)

People were nasty though...they werent washing their hands in the bathroom, grabbing rolls and stuff with their hands.

Hope all that were sick are feeling better. I'm not looking forward to going on a cruise on Voyager in the near future. Has anyone ever gotten a full refund from RCL for a norovirus outbreak? The CDC has confirmed this is norovirus, but they haven't inspected the ship. There are still people reporting sick, even today from the current cruise. CDC feels with over 3,000 people on board, the virus is being carried by passengers and spread by passengers NOT washing their hands. Wonder how many machines in the casino have been wiped down? None I suspect and can you imagine how many people touch the slot machines all day and night? Uck.

BTW, when I called customer service at RCL, the rep knew nothing about sickness on the Voyager.

I was on the 5/7 trip on the Voyager...no illess. About 5 years ago I went on Holland America and got sick right when I got home...they didn't seem to care when we called and then wrote a letter. I ended up in the hospital for 3 days after puking my guts out ever 15 minutes for 12 straight hours. Not fun. Still...this wouldn't stop me from going again. Just be careful, I guess. I didn't find the Voyager to be dirty or anything. I loved it.

I spoke to the CDC today. As of my call this am, they had one illness called in, but others yesterday and prior to that. Larger numbers called in at the start of the cruise. I do wish they would oversea the sanitation procedures in person. Bring tons of purell with you!

I just called and spoke with the CDC.The information that I was given is that there WAS approx 60-70 people that are on board now that were suffering from this virus, however according to this gentleman, WAS is the key word he said.

There have been no other reports in the last 2 days from the ship according to the CDC.

So hopefully this is better news. From all the advice and recommendations that I have seen here it does appear that as long as proper hand washing and the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is used this will help in the prevention of the virus.

CDC also states the virus is not limited too person to person contact that it is an oral/fecal contact-type of virus.

I will be following what they recommend and hopefully will be able to post from the ship.

This would be heplful for me and many others if people on board now where able to post to keep us up to date.

Carol: I was told one person ill today so far. This is not an easy to eradict virus and based on the descriptions of illnesses in public places, it would appear difficult to keep all surfaces sanitized. Hopefully more people will post regarding the health conditions on board. Are there any other threads to check re voyager?

I'm not sure about any other posts or websites to see if anyone is currently posting from the ship.

Although I am going through some other cruise boards but so far I have not been able to locate anything else.

I'm really stressing out over this and I know that I shouldn't because it is not completely within my control.

So I guess the best thing is to "go with the flow" and hope all folks take the precautionary measures that have been given.

I will have a great time sick or not :)

That right Carol, just go with it, take extra precautions when you can, and hope for the best, no sense in getting too stressed over this.

Have an extra drink, and get some alcohol inside you.

If I have to get sick, I just hope its on the way home! I can't do anything about it now.

See you at the Sky Bar at sail away.

I guess this will be the week I break that nasty habit of bitting my nails.

I've already told my 7 year old - "wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands"

Heading to NYC tomorrow.

Hello, I was on the Voyager May 7th - 15, I know Monack said there were no incidences on that cruise, however one of our tablemates became ill during the cruise, missed dinner the last couple of nites, his friend became ill on arrival home, and while on the cruise, i heard a few parents talking that some of the kids in the Adventure Ocean program were vomiting ( violently according to one dad) . A few of the staff were ill, tho no one stated if this is what the crew had.

hope all are well now~

This sounds like a truly miserable virus. I have to say, hearing these stories (and more frequently it seems), I really wonder whether to cruise again. And, we've been on numerous cruises in the last 3-4 years. It seems that the tight living quarters aboard ship provide a perfect breeding ground for this virus.

I realize people say it's not the cruise line's fault. It happens in hospitals, day cares and rest homes as well. Okay, but, I don't spend my hard-earned money to vacation in those places! I compare a cruise with a land/resort vacation when making my vacation decisions. I'm really leaning toward land/resort vacations these days.

This norovirus doesn't even seem to be confined to a particular time of year. I thought the worst time was Jan-Feb midwinter. But, suddenly it shows up in late May.

Really reconsidering whether to book this year's cruise or not. Although many people post that they'll enjoy their cruise no matter what, I don't see how you can do that 1) if you're as sick, and retching as often and uncontrollably, as has been described on this thread or 2) you're not sick, but everyone else is and the bathrooms, hallways, etc. are full of vomit and/or the odor of it.

Also, I think constant handwashing isn't going to provide much protection because not everyone else on the ship is doing it. You can't be aboard ship and not touch things that have been touched by others before you!

Yes - I had heard about this afterwards on the mix and mingle thread -- and when I talked to hubby about it, he suddenly remembered that he had talked to someone during the blackjack tournoment who said that one of his kids was really sick.
