Smoking on ships

We're considering a one-way on either HAL, Princess or NCL.

 

Is smoking allowed in cabins/balconies? DH is really sensitive to smoke, so a non-smoking cabin is essential. We're probably looking at a balcony room, so we'd like to avoid having neighbors smoking on their balconies.

 

Where is smoking generally allowed on ships (if it is?)

Our smoking policy reflects our commitment to the comfort of all of our guests. Presently, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and all other indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of:

Casino

Northern Lights Disco (ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Westerdam & ms Zuiderdam only)

Seaview Bar (except that smoking is not permitted in the Seaview Bar on the ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam or ms Statendam)

Sports Bar

Crow's Nest (except that smoking is not permitted in the Crow’s Nest on the ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam or ms Zuiderdam)

 

While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Keeping the comfort of our passengers a priority, and in consideration of consumer studies which show smokers are a small minority of passengers, Princess has implemented the following smoking policy:

Designated Smoking Areas

Clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available onboard and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, as well as a portion of the open decks. As a safety precaution, passengers are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as this may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires.

Stateroom Smoking Policy Update

For all voyages departing after January 15th, 2012, Princess Cruises will prohibit smoking in passenger staterooms and balconies. This policy change reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our passengers who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the passenger’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our passengers, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our passengers escape completely.

Electronic Cigarettes

The use of electronic cigarettes is permitted in all areas onboard with the exception of dining areas and the Princess Theater. However, should a fellow passenger in the vicinity feel inconvenienced and complain, even after being told the difference between electronic cigarettes and real cigarettes, we will ask the passenger to refrain from smoking the electronic cigarette.

We want you to be comfortable on board, so public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke cigarettes, you can do so on your balcony, in the casino or in the Cigar Bar (where available). If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Also, you can smoke cigarettes, pipes and cigars outside on open decks (just not around food venues, sports decks, kids’ pool areas and other designated nonsmoking areas). Smoking inside your stateroom will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account.

Yes, do verify with the cruise lines you are considering.

 

A no smoking room on a cruise ship is not the same as in a hotel in the USA. Some cruise lines allow smoking in any room and then clean up the room after the smoker has left the ship.

 

You need to know what's what before you make an expensive booking.

As Krazy Kruisers says, I think Celebrity has the strictest no smoking policy, with only a few designated areas. 2nd would probably be Princess. Neither allow smoking in the stateroom or balcony.

 

HAL and NCL both prohibit smoking in the stateroom, BUT allow smoking on the balcony.

 

Keith 1010 gave you the smoking policy from the websites for NCL, HAL & Princess.

No since we're looking at a one-way that goes to Glacier Bay. Celebrity doesn't do that route, unfortunately. However, it looks like Princess has a very similar policy, so they may be the one we end up with. Thanks to all for you input.
