Bindery Posted November 13, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 13, 2012 My wife and I are going on a Carnival cruise that docks in Civitavecchia for a day. We have already been to Rome, so I am thinking about renting a car and driving the Italian countryside for the day. I have just looked a Hertz and it seems a 1 day rental would be about $100. I would appreciate any advice or comments on this.
euro cruiser Posted November 13, 2012 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2012 The rate sounds about right to me, although it would be better to hear from someone who has had a one day rental more recently than I have. Driving in the countryside is relatively easy, but if you've never driven in Italy before there are some things you should familiarize yourself with first. One thing is the International Driving Permit (IDP). While it is technically required, I've never had a rental agency ask to see it. It only becomes important if you get pulled over or have an accident. You can easily obtain one in the States for about $20 from AAA.
Ctaycruiser Posted February 18, 2013 #3 Share Posted February 18, 2013 That is a great idea! Places that are beautiful to visit by car from CIV is Tuscania, Tarquinia, Lake Bracciano....you can't go wrong with any of these towns. BEAUTIFUL ALL OF THEM! Italylecturer Posted February 23, 2013 #4 Share Posted February 23, 2013 The rental is not so expensive, its the voluntary insurance they sell you. Driving is easy, roads are good, Not to miss: Tarquinia, Vetralla, Viterbo and if you have time Orvieto and the Monster Park of Bomarzo.

pt-cruiser Posted February 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted February 25, 2013 Have you tried Europcar? Yes. Their online system shows that one location is open at 10:30 a.m. Closes at 11:30 a.m. Looking for an earlier start.
MaddieEms Posted February 25, 2013 #8 Share Posted February 25, 2013 Are there any Hertz codes that include insurance? Do US Hertz codes work for European rentals? Just curious.
maryann ns Posted February 26, 2013 #9 Share Posted February 26, 2013 This question has come up before. If you go back to the Ports page for Italy you can do a search.

Bindery Posted March 4, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted March 4, 2013 Thanks for the suggestions. I do want to see Orvieto. I do plan on taking extra insurance, I have good car insurance and my credit card would cover the rest, but I just don't want any hassle if I get in an accident in a foreign country. They have the super cover for 26 euros. I did get the international drivers license from AAA for $15.
