Air Deviation Question

How about another twist?

Our deviated flight plan was subjected to a schedule change of about ten hours on our flight home. As one might expect, the flights home (including the connection) were not quite as "special" as what we had originally agreed to. By this I mean a longer layover on a connection. What are our options when dealing with the schedule change? Are we still obligated to pay the deviation fee (alread paid as a result of the original schedule) or would this be refundable given the schedule change?

I would ask your TA (if you used one) or the deviation dept

They have no control over the airlines changing their schedule but they may be able to find you a different routing that will work for you

  • 3 weeks later...

we recently tried to do an air deviation with Oceania. We were given a few options but NOT all options and the flights we wanted weren't offered. So we declined, had the air removed from our package (and were not charged the deviation fee).

Just be aware policies do differ between lines. We have done deviations with Crystal many times and NEVER were unable to get the flights we wanted (by paying air deviation + any price differential). It seems Oceania is different and only offers certain flights (it was not a matter of which airline as other - non-direct - flights on the same airline we wanted were offered).

We booked our air independently on the direct flight we wanted.

It's not clear to me if you only looked at the options that were offered to you by O or if you did request the schedule(s) that you preferred. I haven't done this myself (!) but I have gathered from prior posts that you can request an itinerary. Sometimes you can get it for the "free" option with the deviation fee, sometimes there is an additional fee (I suppose in case it's with an airline that doesn't have a contractual relationship with the cruise line) -- but it IS possible.

Or so I understand ...

Now, if you did indeed request specific itineraries all I can say is, "never mind"!

Did you ask for the flights you wanted??

I have always asked & received the flights I requested one had an upcharge but it worked for me

What springs to mind when I read this is that Oceania has a policy of only dealing with major carriers, unless nothing else is available, or the passenger would be extremely inconvenienced.

If you had come back to them with a specific request for the flights that you truly wanted, the result may have been different.

We requested and received the flights we wanted....initially. Subsequently, the airline changed their schedule resulting in a longer layover on a connection on the return flight. Not ideal but doable, especially with lounge access. :D

Our air differential cost for our desired flights was $400 so our total air, including the deviation fee through Oceania, was $3,050. To buy our flights ourselves today would be almost $8,500. Needless to say, without the Oceania air, we would be staying home. It's possible that our cost would have been less had we actually purchased last fall but moot at this point. As it stands, we're very pleased with how this worked out.
