If your cruise ship should set sail for Freeport, Bahamas as one of its destinations there is an exciting excursion for you. This wonderful excursion last three hours and well worth your time and money to sail and be a part of tall ship Alexander Von Humboldt 106 year old history!

Freeport, Bahamas took possession of the beautiful 106 year old Alexander Von Humboldt on March 15, 2012. She was launched on September 10,1906, built and sailed in Germany during her earlier years. She was originally built to be a reserve lightvessel. Her first home port was Sonderburg, Denmark.

In 1945 she became a permanent light vessel replacing the Kiel. In the spring of 1957 she was rammed by a Swedish freighter and sank, was raised and after a two-year overhaul returned to service in 1959.

The Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training or DSST (German Sail Training Foundation) bought the vessel and transformed her into a tall ship based on her sailing ship hull. May 30, 1988 she was christened Alexander von Humboldt after the celebrated German explorer. Her hull was painted green and Green sails were installed as a marketing tool for advertising campaigns by the ship's sponsor, the German beer brewer Becks.

She is referred to by her crew as "Alex". She served as a sail training ship and is the flagship of DSST. She has traveled over 300,000 nautical miles (560,000 km) in 20 years (equal to 14 times around the equator). High points every year were the tall ships races and winter cruises to the Canary Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. During summer months she sailed in the North and Baltic Seas.

In commemoration of Alexander von Humboldt's expedition to South America and the Caribbean was her longest sailing. On January 19, 2006, "Alex" rounded Cape Horn under sail, following the route of the legendary Tall Ships of the 19th and early 20th century in celebration of her centenary year.

She was taken out of service in October 2011 for DSST and replaced by the newly built Alexander von Humboldt II. She was sold and relocated to the Bahamas in early 2012.
