Help First cruise

Grand Cayman is a tender port. Your ship will anchor a short distance off shore and you will transfer to a smaller tender boat that will bring you to shore.

The tender boats dock at one of three piers right in the heart of George Town and within easy walking distance of shopping - no taxi needed.

There are plenty of taxis and tour buses right at the port for transportation to other attractions. Some Cruise Critic readers prefer to take the short walk to the library on Edward St and catch the public buses which are cheaper.

However on rare occasion all of this gets turned around due to the weather. If a winter storm is coming through the eastern US, that sometimes changes the winds direction in Cayman and makes tendering ashore in George Town unsafe. On such days the ships tender to an alternate site, Spotts, on the south shore of the island. There will be many taxi and tour buses waiting to meet your transport needs on such days.

Lots of taxis available and there is good shopping within walking distance of the piers the tenders use.

The BEST thing in GC has to be Stingray City -- book a private tour with Moby Dick or one of the other operators (not thorugh the ship!) and enjoy a nice boat ride, a little time to snorkel on the reef, and then some time holding, petting and kissing (for 7 years of good luck!) a stingray or two. Great fun and an unforgetable experience! :)

As others have stated, shopping is all within walking distance. Shopping in Grand Cayman is on the expensive side. Of all the Western Caribbean ports, Grand Cayman is my least favorite to shop in. Well, except for the Tortuga Rum Cake!:D There are also lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Doing our first cruise Feb 10 Western Carribean, Celebrity Silloette,

stopping in George town, can you just get a taxi to downtown shopping or anything else? Thanks

This is a really nice port to just wander around on your own. They have a few neat bars and cute shops. It's very pretty to spend the day there.

Have fun!
