Norway Farewell Pictures

Sad to see her go. Always wanted to sail her as the Norway after sailing her as the France as a teenager. Traveled with my aunt, uncle and cousins from NY to France. In those days it was a three class ship and was able to travel first class.

Sorry to contradict your memory, but FRANCE had only two classes (first and tourist).

I am sure first-class on the FRANCE must have been quite an experience.

At the time, the NY Times restaurant critic, when asked to name the best French restaurant in the world, named her Chambord (first-class) Restaurant!

We were on the last cruise of the Norway two years ago. We had just docked back in Miami when the boiler blew up. We thought she was a great ship and were planning to sail her again. Too bad that terrible accident happened with the loss of life that morning.

We were in one of the rear penthouses and except for the constant vibration it was one of our best cruises. I still have my room key.

I looked up a site that sells cruise ships (apparently a broker) at http://www.tug-barge.com and the Norway was listed as "currently being towed to Indonesia area" as of June 15th. I guess it's good-bye to this grand old ship. I missed sailing on her by one week. She had that terrible tragedy exactly one week before we were to board.

Boiler exploded, killing several crew.

She has not been in service since.

Thanks. I noticed I spelled "her" wrong.

When did the accident happen and where?

What happened to the people who booked her but never got to cruise on her, did they get their money back?

Where are they taking the ship now? Are they sinking it or just leaving it at a dock somewhere?

Miami, May 2003.

Yes.

After the accident, in June 2003 she was towed to Lloyd Werft at Bremerhaven, Germany. At the time NCL intended to repair her, and it was thought that this yard would do the repairs.

Unfortunately they found that repairing her would have been unfeasible. She continued to be laid-up at Lloyd Werft as they figured out what to do with her. There were various offers to buy the ship and turn her into a hotel, museum, etc., but none of these proved solid financially, so NCL did not sell her.

She has now been turned over to NCL's parent company, Malaysian-based Star Cruises. She is ostensibly being towed to Port Klang, Malaysia, for some undisclosed use, but there is a lot of debate and speculation over what is going to be done with her. At this point we can only wait and see.

A very good history of NORWAY can be seen here, a good primer for those not familiar with the ship and her history.

We were on her fateful last cruise. Sorry to see her go out of our service area, perhaps she will live on in Asia.

When we were in St Thomas, that last cruise, it was kind of neat to be riding her tender past all the new ships out to where she was parked beyond the harbor. She carried her own tenders and because of her deep draft, could not dock anywhere but Miami.

We left St. Thomas the same time as another ship and we raced side by side for about 10 miles then the other ship let us win and they turned away. All the ships blew their horns in her honor when we left St. Thomas.

Does anyone know what kind of crew is onborad for the trip to the Far East and if all the things like water, A/C and electric still work on the trip?

I would be interested in seeing any photos that have been taken onboard the Norway since her trip to Germany just to see how bad or good she still looks?

SS NORWAY lies at anchor off Port Klang. Her turbines are reported to be dismantled so use as a slow moving casino/cruise vessel is unlikely.Further it is reported that several Indian scrap merchants have been around. There is talk of a tow to Goa in the weeks ahead.
