Extra meals "to go" for hungry teen

Apparently the left hand doesnt always know what the right hand or they make up policies as they go.

 

A few years ago our son was hung over and couldnt make it to dinner. We ordered for him to take back and they insisted on having room service pick it up and deliver. Made no sense as we had to go back to the cabin and be there for delivery as he was asleep and not ready to get up.

 

Last cruise my wife was not feeling well (not hungover) and the waiter had no problem packing up a dinner order for me to take back to our cabin.

 

As I said, under limited circumstances it does happen. But I believe that the more requests they get for this kind of special consideration when it's simply for personal convenience; the more strict they will be in allowing it.

 

A kid that can come to the dining room and order as many entree's as he chooses should be able to sustain himself on the alternative dining options that are available. And not request or require special consideration from the MDR for to go meals.

The easy answer is for him to go to the late night buffet.

A kid that can come to the dining room and order as many entree's as he chooses should be able to sustain himself on the alternative dining options that are available. And not request or require special consideration from the MDR for to go meals.

 

:confused: I hope I am misunderstanding what is being said here. I was just curious as to what we can/cannot do, that's all. This will be our first Carnival cruise, and since our last cruise was Disney 2009 (totally different ballpark when it comes to late night dining), the need for more food options later at night are different now that we have a growing teenager. I was just asking, that's all. And like I mentioned before, I was under the impression that most eateries are closed 10-ish, and since my son is a night owl, I was just making sure he's got more options than pizza and room service... which is just fine, mind you. ;)

 

DS will not starve. That's been established. I understand how the MDR works now. That's been established. I will NOT be "requesting" special arrangements for him. That's been established. I just don't understand why the snarky remark?? Was that directed at me??

I understand that one can order extra meals in the MDR, but how are they with "to go" boxes? My 14 yr old son has a hallow leg ;) and 20 minutes after eating, he's hungry again. Can we order extra meals/desserts and take with us for later?

 

And yes, I know there's room service and pizza (he's not a huge pizza fan), but just want to know all of our options incase he's wanting a repeat of dinner... which is normally the case!:rolleyes:

 

BTW: we have the late dinner seating (8:15) so later meals will be limited due to hours of operation, or so I've read.

Not particularly directed at you, and I don't think particularly snarky...I've cruised on Carnival exclusively and have seen many many people behave with an entitled attitude and indeed demand special treatment for a variety of issues....

I guess it was really more in response to a PP poster kind of suggesting that it's not all that uncommon to request this and I do feel that the more people who do request it, the less likely Carnival will be to be as accomodating to people who have an actual need to get to go meals.

I dunno, on the Legend last week I saw plenty of folks by the elevators carrying plates of food with the warming cover on it. It looked exactly like how the waiters carry around the food in the MDR. I don't see why you couldn't order 2 or 3 main courses, and when they bring them have them keep the warming cover on it and then take it up to your room. It seemed like that's what the folks on the Legend were doing. It's the same plates that room service uses, so I'm not sure why they would have a problem with that and I don't think it's that big of a deal.

There is usually a HUGE Mexican buffet one night at midnight, and all the other nights there is a burger station set up around 11 or 12 at night with burgers, fries, hot dogs, and some other options - so even if he's not a pizza fan, he can grab a burger late at night if he's still hungry.

ooh! Tacos are good! The kid can eat his weight in those!

 

Considering we are on the Breeze, I've not seen posted the midnight buffet options.... new ship and all, so limited info. Again, basically a newbie when it comes to cruising and appreciate the info of you seasoned cruisers! :)

When we were on the Dream in October, a couple of nights, I brought the cheese plate from the MDR back to the room. They would put a cover on it (even give me a fork inside) and I would carry it back to the room. I have to take medicine at night and it doesn't irritate me as much if I take it with food.

 

By the end of the week, they would automatically bring my cheese plate with cover!

I hope they continue to have the late night burger option - if we've been at the comedy show, or the disco, and we get hungry, my dh can eat some pizza and be good, but I need protein - I usually have a burger patty with some grilled onions and mushrooms - perfect!

Tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, you name it - plus TONS of desserts, from churros and flan to strawberry shortcake. It's a really nice treat.

Your son can most certainly order multiples of an item and ask for them to be brought with covers. Granted, the food won't stay hot for long, but kids will eat anything.

 

I love ordering extras of favorite desserts to take back to the cabin for late night snack or even breakfast. (The Warm Date, Fig, and Cinnamon Cake is especially delicious with milk for breakfast!)

 

Does he know that there is free soft-serve ice cream and fro-yo 25 hours a day?

 

 

As a general rule, taking food to go from the MDR is not allowed. There are exceptions when someone in the cabin is ill or can't come to the dining room that evening.

 

You should discuss this with the MD, but if they started allowing this on a widespread basis then it would get out of control easily. There are a lot of people who would like to have dinner on their balcony, but the consistent answer from Carnival is no.

 

The alternative dining options include:

 

Regular Lido buffet from 6:00 - 9:30

Sushi 5:00 - 8:15pm

Late Night Buffet 11:30 - 1:00am

Deli 11am to 11pm

Pizza 24 hours

Room Service 24 hours

I've often ordered an extra something, be it a fruit soup, salad, or dessert, and asked for it with a cover so I can take it with me. Our waiters have always brought them to us with no problem. They even supplied utensils.

I'll just commiserate - our son is 15 next month, 6'4", and could still wear the same pants he wore 6 years ago if they weren't so short. One of the reasons we chose late seating was so he could go to the buffet for first dinner and still eat dinner with us. :rolleyes:

I was in a casino buffet a few years ago and watched a lady go to the buffet and load plate after plate of u peel em shrimp and put them in baggies and shove them in her purse.Pretty disgusting when you can go to your grocery store and buy 2 pound bags for like $12

I'm really surprised about the to-go plates. We've had tablemates ask on two different cruises and they were told no, it's against policy. Different ships, too.

 

I didn't question it because like someone else said, it could get really out of hand. They would even have to keep more dishes on hand since they could run short in the dining room if too many went back to rooms. Then you run into the breakage/theft isse as well. Sad, but true. Having worked in a 4 diamond restaurant many years back, people will still the dang silver and china and that was while they in the restaurant and thought we weren't looking. That's why room service plates are plain old white with no logo or anything on them. Less temptation for someone to want a souvenier.:(

As for the MDR "to go" food saga....

I can see how that request could & would get out of hand. The MDR would be out of lobster and molten cake the first night! ;)

I'm embarrassed to say that on Lobster/Shrimp night - my husband ate FIVE entrees! As long as you ask for them, they'll bring em I guess?

That's what I notice on the last day of the cruise. There is never a time when the Lido is not packed with people trying to get their last fill. :D
