eynsteinp Posted January 9, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 9, 2013 I am booked on the Breakaway for June on the Bermuda itinerary. I was wondering if the casino was opened on the nights that you are in Bermuda. Any information would be appreciated.

jdvmd Posted January 12, 2013 #13 Share Posted January 12, 2013 Is there a casino in Bermuda? http://www.elbowbeachcycles.com/gambling-in-bermuda/ Unlike many tourist destinations around the world, there are no casinos in Bermuda and gambling on gaming machines is illegal. This legislation extends to cruise ships anchored in Bermuda ports too. In 2009, a challenge to allow it was turned down by the Bermuda Parliament. Casino-style gambling machines that were once popular in bars and pubs have even been outlawed since 2004. Betting however, is permitted on bingo, raffles, horse and dog races as well as British and American football. In March 2010, the Bermuda government released a report assessing the possibility of introducing gambling on a small scale. It argued that taxes on gambling would generate revenues and boost tourism. But in May 2010, a survey conducted by a Bermudian research company revealed that almost half of residents (49%) were not in favour of legalising gambling. Still, 47% agreed that introducing casinos would improve tourism. At the moment and until the government decides to push forward a new legislation, gambling is not allowed in cruise ships while docked in Bermuda which means that casinos must be closed for the duration of the stay. On-board shows and entertainment also have to be shut down by law unless these are provided by Bermudians. It is a way for Bermuda to encourage cruise tourists to spend money in Bermuda and not only in the ships. Since June 2008, there is the possibility for ships to run night casinos but only on the conditions that cruise lines engage heavily in Bermuda events and activities. Wait, so the ship will not have entertainment either? I have never read this part either. So no shows, no shops open, and no casino. What do they expect everyone to do when they get back to the ship? Just eat and sleep? This is making me rethink my cruise to Bermuda. :(

There is not now, nor has there ever been nor will there ever be a ban on Shows, Entertainment. Deck parties, Bands, promenade stuff...etc.... At the moment and until the government decides to push forward a new legislation, gambling is not allowed in cruise ships while docked in Bermuda which means that casinos must be closed for the duration of the stay. True but this is a hot topic and may change very soon. On-board shows and entertainment also have to be shut down by law unless these are provided by Bermudians. Total BS...no such law...never was....if I am wromg then I need proof from this poster. LAW...hellloooo never heard of it...there are no homes around just boats and noises from showrooms do not permeate. This is a whack statement if I ever heard of one...I had shows in October and you can bet your bottom $$$ kevin Sheehan is pissed enopugh about the casinos...DO YOU THINK he would bring a ship like the breakaway with out its entertainment...NEVER It is a way for Bermuda to encourage cruise tourists to spend money in Bermuda and not only in the ships. Since June 2008, there is the possibility for ships to run night casinos but only on the conditions that cruise lines engage heavily in Bermuda events and activities. There has been discussions....not possibility YET Where is this poster getting this stuff from?????? Kim ...relax.......Everything is OK.....Even casinos may be open from 10:00-5:00 am by then but if not, just the shops and casino closed. K:cool: Whew! :o I had talked myself in to this cruise knowing that there wasn't going to be any gambling...which I will TOTALLY hate, but I knew it in advance. But no shows REALLY took me by surprise. That would pretty much leave us with nothing to do but eat and sleep there. So do they also not have the kids program going during the 3 days in port as well? Or are they open but you have to pay the $6/hr like if they were sitting while you are in port (but not actually off the ship is what I'm asking).

My apologies to JDVMD...Who obviously got this information from a Bermuda Vendor.....Elbow Cycles Again, this is a vendor...who would like you to believe there is nada for you to do on your ship...e.g. shows... They quote: Why not dedicate all your time on the Island to discover its beautiful beaches, learn about its history, meet the friendly locals and take in the wonderful landscapes. In Bermuda, you have nothing to lose and lots to win – especially with our fantastic Bermuda scooter rental deals! I searched all the Sun and Gazette articles on tourism and The Bermuda Government site and nowhere can I find a law against shows....But Elbow cycle would like you to believe there is a lack odf ships ameneties so better rent that cycle.

There once WAS a ban on entertainment. Back in 2001 we were on a cruise when the CD was "testing" the waters by having entertainment while we were in port because at that time, it was not permitted. He said he was going ahead with shows because he said, "what could they do"? It is also true that any entertainment had to be provided by Bermudians if there was any entertainment at all on the ship. I could do a search to further back up my onfo but do not have time at the moment. Just because you have never heard of it doesn't mean it's not true. We have been cruising every year to Bermuda since 2001.

OK so 2001 was 12 years ago....why would anyone want to roil the waters in 2013 by bringing up something that may have been in the distant past. Like I said, I have only been cruising to BDA since 2006, and always had entertainment on board....I sometimes get dramatic and state things like never was.... never will be...but I also believe that a long lost rule should not be made to appear relevant and scare a lot of unfamiliar travelers...and that would be my point...less the dramatics
luv2cruise53 Posted January 12, 2013 #24 Share Posted January 12, 2013 Along these lines on an obscure law being made to seem relevant. They used to dunk wenches in St George...allowed by law....I know they still do the reenactment....but should someone post an obscure law about wench dunking and thus scare all the wenches that cruise to Bermuda today?:D I think not. Wenches take note....you will no longer be dunked in Bermuda today,...that was an old law...LOL:eek:
