che5904 Posted January 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2013 May sound like a strange question but I am extremely directionly disfunctional. And looking out a window does not help me figure out which way the ship is heading to walk in the direction of the bow or stern (DH can do this, I on the other hand can't - they all look like plain old big waves to me:eek:). I will have my deck plans in hand, I have that covered to know where everything is. What I was wondering was 3 things. 1. Are there ship diagrams at entrances like elevator halls and the atrium with a layout of the ship showing the bow in the actual direction of the bow? 2. Are there any tricks or tips or secrets onboard that give you an idea on which direction you are traveling or which staircase you are on. an example of this: NCL Dawn had fish swimming in the direction of the bow in the cabin hallways. The photos in the staircase represented what staircase it was. Mid staircase had pictures that started with "M" like paintings of "M"arilyn Munroe. 3. Is there a diagram on the back of the cabin door with the deck layout (I think it is there for emergency purposes). But our last cruises the bow on the diagram was in the direction of the actual bow of the ship. Most times I forgot to glance at it before going out and shutting the door, leaving me standing in the hallway looking totally bewildered :o, but at least I knew I could open the door again to figure out which way I was suppose to be walking for where I was going. You can all go ahead and laugh at me, I have a good sense of humor and normally laugh at myself about this. :D
Peg_S Posted January 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Sorry I can't help with any of your questions...but you have made me aware of another benefit of having an extended aft balcony: there is no confusion about which way to walk!!! WLHyatt Posted January 20, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 20, 2013 On cabin decks, look at the room numbers, if they are going down, you are going forward. On deck 3, if you hit the wall in a dining room(where the galley is), turn around, if you see windows you're looking at the aft end, if you see the lobby, you're looking forward. On deck 5, if you are in the main promenade, and the casino and sushi and all that stuff is on your left, you are facing forward, if the windows are on your left, you are looking aft. The rest of the decks are pretty open.

Thanks OK, Bow= smaller #'s Stern = higher #'s, I'll try and remember that
westview1 Posted January 20, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 20, 2013 When on the deck with all cabins remember rooms ending with an even number are port, odd number starboard. So if you are going forward, the numbers go down and if they are even also, you are on the port side (right side).

Thanks but I've tried all these "remember" things but age has really gotten the better of my memory. I was look more for obvious tips or actual diagrams that would save me trying to remember this kind of thing.

The diagram is pointing in the correct direction towards the front or the back.
golfadj Posted January 20, 2013 #11 Share Posted January 20, 2013 As I stated above, DH can do that, that still doesn't help me. Pick a point in the water and watch it for a second or two and you can tell which way the ship is moving and go accordingly.

Great now I have my cabin floor figured out, when I exit the elevator figured out, now all I have to do is figure out which staircase I am on and whether I'm on the Starboard or Port side of the ship :D
kewbrook Posted January 20, 2013 #13 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Che5904 I feel your pain. I have been on the Glory 4 times and I still get lost. To help me we get a room on the lowest floor available (Riviera) at the very front. Still many times I have gone to the very back looking for my room. I love what NCL does with the carpeting that is a big help. I never knew that about the pictures I will have to notice that next time.

They may have changed the pictures during drydock, I was on before drydock. And the sister ship the star didn't have that feature or the fish which was a bummer. The pearl has the fish though. We paid for a behind the scenes tour on the Dawn and were told those tricks while on the tour by our guide. This tour was toward then end of our cruise though, so the first 1/2 of my cruise I was always walking around in circles. :( :D

I try to look for a painting or some artwork to remind me which is "my side" of the ship. Hahaha, with my luck the artwork I would be looking at would be from the Art Auction and would be sold or put away the next time I went past. NCL also has something about blue and red carpet tricks, but I forget which side is blue and which side is red, so that never helps me. firemanbobswife Posted January 20, 2013 #17 Share Posted January 20, 2013 I'm also directionally challenged. Since DH always navigates, I'm sure I'll be lost too. We can just follow each other around on the Glory. Talk about the blind leading the blind! Hopefully I'll be able to remember a little bit of the Conquest Class layout from our 3 previous cruises. If not, oh well. We're doomed! Do you think we could get a service dog that can tell us which way to go? :D
bbohbbneedacruise Posted January 20, 2013 #18 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Even numbered cabins are port which is left side of ship. The words even, port and left all have an even amount of letters. Odd numbered cabins are starboard which is right side of ship. The words odd, starboard and right all have an odd number of letters. When walking in cabin hallways if the numbers are going down 7258, 7254, 7252 you are heading forward. If the numbers are going higher 7258, 7260, 7262 you are heading aft. On the open deck use the Whale tail for direction. The tail is aft. LOL

Hahahaha I can identify with this. Just look at your hands on your left hand the index and thumb make the letter L. Left is an even number of letters port side even numbered cabins.;)

I'll be on the wrong side of the ship for sure. Doesn't matter I guess because we're aft so I'll just walk across the back interior hallway :)
WLHyatt Posted January 20, 2013 #21 Share Posted January 20, 2013 If you get lost, just find the closest elevator, go to deck 9. If you wind up in cabins, you're forward, if you wind up in the Lido Buffet area, you're midship, if you wind up near the covered aft pool, you are aft. Then just figure out where you need to go from there.

kewbrook Posted January 20, 2013 #25 Share Posted January 20, 2013 I remember when I was 30 minutes late to dinner since I was lost and kept walking in circles. Maps on the walls don't always help me. I am getting on the glory again soon. At least I can find my room. Bottom front.
