If choosing which one for a mostly beach day, can I spend half a day at Nevis and them walk around the port?

How are you planning to get to Nevis and back in time to catch your ship if it is docked in St. Kitts? Check the ferry schedule.

Or will the ship anchor in Nevis and you tender ashore? I would stay on whichever island your ship is.

Have been to Nevis as part of a ship's excursion; beach time there was included.

The ship docks in st kitts but there is a Nevis ferry that would get us back I believe

Several cruise lines now offer a Nevis excursion from St Kitts. The ferry schedule & your ships departure schedule are the key issues for any trip over to Nevis from St Kitts. It is a minimum of 45 min each way with the ferries that leave from Basseterre to Charlestown and return. The ferry time would be shorter with the Sea Bridge but you have to arrange for a taxi to get to Majors Bay & back.

Went along with some friends who booked a full island Nevis tour via Thenford Grey, stopping at various plantations and other sites. It was an excellent tour, stopped at Golden Rock for a for a light lunch - the monkey trail was lively and picturesque and got back in good time to enjoy a brief tour of the Southeast Peninsula of St. Kitts. Price was USD 75 per person ( this did not include lunch).
