Southerngrits10 Posted January 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2013 We are wondering if the shore excursions are worth the price, or can self tours be possible in Monte Carlo, Provence, Barcelona, Cartagena Oportio, La Coruna And Bilbao. We can't do a lot of walking, have any of you been to those ports? Also, we were wondering about the use of credit cards or changing to local money. We have not cruised in Europe. I am so glad to have found this site. Thanks for any tips.
Mark_T Posted January 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 29, 2013 It looks like you'll be using Euros for your trip until you reach London. Rather than changing $$ to Euro I'd suggest you check with your bank about using your Debit card to draw cash from local ATM outlets at your destination, the rates are usually noticeably better than changing on-board. Credit card use can be a little challenging at times as most of Europe has already switched to using chip&pin cards which do not require a signature but use an embedded chip in the card and a pin you key into a terminal to confirm the purchase. A lot of retailers/restaurants will still be willing to handle a card with only a mag stripe, but unattended facilities will often not have any alternative. Cash is probably a better option in most cases.
YoHoHo Posted January 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Welcome to CC. I suggest you join the Roll Call for your cruise. This is another section of the CC board you can access from the main page. Find Oceania, then your ship, then a thread about your sailing (that can be a little challenging because some of the subject lines can be a little cryptic) This is where you can find what others are planning and discussing for your sailing and perhaps join private excursions which many enjoy - if you have mobility issues or concerns when away from the ship, the ships excursions, while pricey can be a suitable option too Another place to research your itinerary is the Ports of Call section. There are some very experienced and sometimes locals who regularly posts and answer questions so there is great information there too
neepawa Posted January 29, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 29, 2013 I believe you are doing a back-to back (B2B), Rome to Lisbon, then Lisbon to London. There is a Roll Call at this website to contact others on your cruise: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1706021&highlight=june+2013 Cheers, Don
