mn_isla_girl Posted January 31, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 31, 2013 what time can we expect to board the Valor departing from San Juan at 10pm??Our plane gets in at 11am, so I am trying to figure out if we should go right to the port or do some sightseeing first. Will lunch be avail on the Valor once we board?? Thanks, I've cruised the Victory twice from San Juan. I dropped my luggage at the ship once I checked out of my hotel (probably between 11am and noon) then went exploring and had lunch before checking in and getting on the ship around 4:30. If your plane lands at 11 you would be able to go right to the ship and check in if you want, and then get off and explore, or explore first, it wouldn't matter, you don't HAVE to be on the ship until 8:30. Lunch will be available on the ship as soon as you board, yes. Rooms should be ready between 1 and 2.

ahoymates Posted February 6, 2013 #6 Share Posted February 6, 2013 Thank ypu! This information is very helpful. I had the same question. Want to take advantage of late sailing by taking in some of San Juan.
takevtr1 Posted February 6, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted February 6, 2013 Now I just have to figure out what to see and do while we have some free time in OSJ. We arrive in SJ by 11am and hope to be on the Valor no later than 12:30 or so. Have lunch, unpack, and then stroll around town. We will not take any organized tour, but may take a taxi from place to place. Anybody have ideas on what can be done with the somewhat limited time we have? S.P.Q.R./Morunt Posted February 7, 2013 #8 Share Posted February 7, 2013 I would not taxi. OSJ is very walkable. Theres also a shuttle that goes around.

Anybody have ideas on what can be done with the somewhat limited time we have? We're on this cruise Sept 1, 2013 but will arrive a couple days earlier to enjoy PR. You can google Old San Juan 4 hour (there's a 6 hour tour, as well) walking tours. There's a lot of history in OSJ so there's a lot to see. From what I understand, the two forts close early evening so you might want to see them first. I hope you have a great cruise!

kansascruiser1 Posted February 8, 2013 #11 Share Posted February 8, 2013 We will be on this ship for the March 3 sailing. Very excited for an awesome itinerary! I hope those of you who are cruising on the Valor out of San Juan post a review of the ship/cruise etc when you return. We've been on the Carnival Victory out of San Juan twice now. June 30th we are booked on the Valor out of San Juan. Anxious to hear what the Valor is like compared to the Victory. I just love this itinerary.....love the islands. We are flying into San Juan 3 days early. We always stay at the Marriott Stellaris on Condado Beach. We can't wait to go back! I won some money at the casino in the Marriott last year on the slots so I took my husband out to eat at the Marmalade in San Juan........that was very nice. We try to consolidate our trips back and forth to Old San Juan due to the taxi fares can kill a guy. Last year we checked out Isla Verde's Marriott, it's further away from OSJ, so we decided to stick with good ole faithful Marriott on Condado Beach. Thanks! takevtr1 Posted February 9, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted February 9, 2013 thanks everybody for the suggestions on what to do in OSJ. I like the walking part, as long as it is not too hot.
coder01 Posted February 10, 2013 #13 Share Posted February 10, 2013 We have early dining and was wondering if the first evening if it still at 6:00 pm? And like most other cruises I expect that we do not have to dress up the first night. :)
Elliott0821 Posted February 14, 2013 #14 Share Posted February 14, 2013 Our flight comes in at 1230pm the day of sailing, neither of us have ever been to PR. Those of you who have been there would you suggest getting the Carnival transportation (if so do you know what hours it runs) or is there another option you have used. takevtr1 Posted February 15, 2013 Author #15 Share Posted February 15, 2013 I am sailing her on 8/4 and most likely plan on just getting a taxi fro the airport as suggested by others on this board. I know the transfers are about $30 R/T pp. I think a taxi will be about $19 each way for up to 4 persons plus $1 per bag that they have to handle. As far as dinner goes, the first night is casual. But I can't remember if you have to go based on your assigned time. I know that you don't sit at your normal table - I think.
icequeen Posted February 16, 2013 #16 Share Posted February 16, 2013 Usually the first night in the dining room is less structured and casual. They sit you wherever there is a spot, not at the table you will have the rest of the week. We have been on the Victory out of San Juan twice and are heading out on the Valor next month. I am interested to see how the ships compare but it is all about the islands on this itinerary :) Some of my favorite ports of call in the Caribbean. I wouldn't bother with transfers from the airport. Just take a cab. You have more control over the timing and it is cheaper. With transfers, quite often you are waiting for others and have to sit around awhile before the bus leaves. We love to check in between 11:30am and noon at the pier. Usually we are on aboard by 12:30pm or 1pm and grab some lunch at the buffet. By the time lunch is done, the cabins are usually available so we will drop our carry ons in the cabin and get off the ship to enjoy Old San Juan. It is so picturesque and walking the cobblestone streets is an experience. We love walking along the waterfront and following the path that goes along beside the old stone wall. You can get to El Morro using that approach and it is a beautiful walk. We have been to both forts and I would say El Morro is our favorite but San Cristobal has its appeal as well. I don't think you will lose whichever you choose. You can actually buy a pass (at either fort) that will allow you access to both forts, if you like. Saves some money if you want to see both. If you google a map of Old San Juan, it will give you a better idea of where you may want to wander or which stores or sights you want to check out. Enjoy! Missywantstotravel Posted February 27, 2013 #19 Share Posted February 27, 2013 What is a good hotel near the pier that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? There will be 4 of us on a budget. We are going in March of next year and I am trying to plan everything as much as I can. Thanks

Thanks I've never been to San Juan before, but I've read great reviews on the Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel directly across from the pier. I thought their rates were reasonable so we're booked there for two nights prior to our cruise in Sept.
Missywantstotravel Posted February 27, 2013 #21 Share Posted February 27, 2013 Thanks Cruizintwosome. I looked at their website. It is definitely something I will look into when they post the March dates. I have a little while to wait before I can do anything. Oh well. (There ia a thread on VH on this forumnwith many photos.) It is right in the heart of Old San Juan. They do book up so you are wise to be planning early.
