Hi sorry if this is already covered. I am thinking of booking the fast tourist train from Chivatvecca to Rome and just spending time shopping and sight seeing has anyone done this and is the main shopping area near st Peters square. Thanks for any help.

I wrote somewhat of an essay on the train and spending a port day in Rome here...

There is good shopping all over Rome but we found particularly good shops along the streets just north of St Peters Square towards the San Pietro Metro station and then in the area around the Spanish Steps extending west to Via Del Corso. There are also some good touristy shops in the area around the Trevi Fountain.

More details here...

Hi,

The fast tourist train can be booked here :

http://www.smartcruisetours.com/index.php/airport-transfers?page=shop.browse&category_id=22

More info on this can be found here :

If you ask me its an excellent way of getting to and from Rome, the regular train can be horrendously crowded, we have stood up crushed like sardines all the way several times !

The two downsides of this train are both related to lack of flexibility. First, you can only come and go on their schedule which means a shorter port day. Second, you can only use one train station, Roma San Pietro, which may not be where you want to go.

There's no real shopping other than of the religious variety right around St. Peter's. What are you looking for?

I want to look round the Trevino fountain Spanish steps St Peters and do some shopping. I also love sitting in a cafe and people watching. Unfortunately my husband has a bad knee and doesn't like to walk to much.

we used this company last year, and would never use again. The train in front of ours was full, our train was next, and people just got on the fast train regardless if they had the correct ticket - we didn't get a seat and people where packed like sardines, I took a panic attack - the smart cruise reps couldn't care less. I also emailed them when I got back home ( October) and I am still waiting a reply. There were 7 cruise ships in Rome the day I visited

I am going again this year and will book via the cruise, expensive, yes, however more safer IMO

The station where this train will drop you off is close to St Peters. It is a fair distance to Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps though and it doesn't sound as if it would be walkable for your husband.

I'd suggest, if you decide to use this train, that you walk to St. Peters on your arrival and look around (what are you hoping to see specifically, just the basilica? or the outside?).

After that, locate the taxi stand just outside the colonnade of St. Peters square and take a taxi to Trevi Fountain. From there, it's a pleasant short-ish walk to the Spanish Steps (having a map will help). Along the way there, you might find an inviting place to sit and have lunch or just a coffee and people watch.

After you get to the Spanish steps and look around, there's a taxi stand at the foot of the steps; you can get a cab there back to your San Pietro train station to go back to Civitavecchia.

That does not sound like them to me at all. They have always answered me promptly and courteously.

Are you sure you got on their train ? People sometimes accidentally get on the wrong train ! I do know that smartcruisetours do NOT have reps on the train.

I am certain that if you email them again, they will be happy to respond.

No need to go into Rome . Even I who live nearby spent a lovely day exploring and shopping in Civitavecchia a town that is full of history and surprises. The market is fun, the restaurants have great sea food. Or you could take the local bus to Tarquinia and check out the Etruscan necropolis and museum .
