Has anyone here looked into/or are using the canon SX50 IS. I have had the sx20 since it came out and have had excellent luck with it but am thinking about the long range lens on the 50.

I have read several reviews and looked at dpreview so I thought I would ask here. My wife and I have both owned 35 mm and I think she would like for us to go back and move up to a dslr, but its a hobby and not sure about going back to a case full of equiptment

We also have a canon sd3500 which does great fish eye shots and is a great pocket camera.

One of my friends just bought the Canon G1X. He got tired of hauling around the DSLR crap. THe G1X the same image quality of the other Canon cropped sensor DSLRs and he can use his flash with it. Tried it out last week, only real issue is a slightly slow AF (compared to DSLR). THe build qulaity is actually better (all metal construction) than the DSLRs.

I've also been looking and reading about the Canon SX50. The zoom reach on it is amazing and I've seen some great (and some not-so-great) pictures from it. I figure as long as it CAN take a great picture, the not-so-great pictures are from people who don't know what they're doing! :)

I've also been comparing it to the Panasonic FZ200. It doesn't have the extreme zoom capability, but it has constant F2.8 and a better electronic viewfinder. Price is about $100 higher and I can't find anywhere local to go and see it. Weight and size about the same, but it also has better battery life than the sx50.

I currently have a Sony DSLR that I love, but not sure I want to lug it on a cruise. I also have a Sony RX100 that I will be taking, but it only has a 5x zoom so it won't cover every situation, but will be great for indoor shots.

I have had the chance to play around with this camera and will be purchasing one for my cruise to Alaska. I will also be taking my Canon DSLR too though. I will admit that my preference has and will probably always be for Canon and especially DSLR, but when I priced out the cost of this camera versus the cost of renting a lens that would get me a little bit better zoom than what I currently have with the added cost of having a slower speed with the rented lens, I was more than happy to go with the SX50. I was most impressed with the build of the SX50 as it is actually better than my DSLR. Yes, the autofocus is a little bit slower, but that is something I can get used to (wanting to manually focus everything may be a little bit harder habit to break with this camera). We also figure this will be a great camera for my husband to use (he is not a photographer at all, but enjoys taking pictures every once in a while) and will work great for being a camera we can just grab and go for quick trips that I don't want to drag a ton of equipment around for. The one thing that I absolutely love about this camera is if you are used to using Canon cameras, the menus and toggle buttons/dials are very similar if not the same. This for me is perfect as I won't have to learn all new menus and buttons of a camera and if my husband is using it and has a question I will easily be able to help him out without taking over!

How do you like the RX100? I'm considering getting one this spring. Only concern is no view finder. The 5X is not an issue as 90% of my shots would fall in it's range.

I really like the shots I'm getting with it. For such a small camera, it offers so much control. It's my always-with-me camera as it's so light and portable. It does well with indoor shots without flash, as you can increase the ISO to 800-1600 without too much noise. Minimum shutter speed is 1/2000 which can be a problem in bright sunlight. You can decrease the aperture or use a ND filter. I also bought the Carryspeed filter adapter so I can use a polarizer, ND filter or closeup filter for macros.
