sail7seas Posted March 10, 2013 #2 Share Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) You can easily cash them at the front office with no commission or charge of any sort. Of course, HAL operates on U.S. $ so can't say what the exchange rate is. Edited March 10, 2013 by sail7seas

sammygoose Posted March 10, 2013 #4 Share Posted March 10, 2013 I had zero problems chasing my USD travellers cheque on my Feb 2013 Eurodam cruise. I just walked up to the main desk and told them what I wanted to do and then $100 was in my hand. It was bonus casino $$ as they have no expiration date and I'd bought it 2 years ago for a trip to Morocco. I love that country, I always gave away dirham before I left as it's not a traded currency and had travellers cheques to spare. Sadly the fact that it is an officially dry country that probably speaks more truth than I'd like......;)
sail7seas Posted March 10, 2013 #5 Share Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) Awesome they are american travellers cheques. Perfect. :) I saw you are from Ontario and you spell 'cheques' that way vs. checks, the way we do in U.S. so I thought it possible you were using Canadian cheques. Of course, you would have been able to cash them, as well. Have a great cruise. Edited March 10, 2013 by sail7seas

I don't know about (Canadian) banks, but our CAA has stopped selling traveller's cheques! :( I believe that the new deal now is preloaded debit cards. ;)

FWIW, American Express has always spelled it cheques. https://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/prepaid/travelers-cheques.html
superoma Posted March 10, 2013 #8 Share Posted March 10, 2013 I don't know about (Canadian) banks, but our CAA has stopped selling traveller's cheques! :( I believe that the new deal now is preloaded debit cards. ;) Glad to hear the ships still take them, but we have stopped buying travellers' cheques. The only place we have been able to cash them on our US land trips is at Walmart, never an issue. Anyone else always made us feel we were trying to cheat them IF they even accepted them. Preloaded debit cards actually makes good sense. You don't have to access your bank account, only the debit account attached to the card - and I think you can get them reloaded if you run short. Someone will correct me if I am wrong about that. We stopped taking travellers' cheques to Europe a long time ago since everyone always charged fees to cash them. cporses Posted March 10, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 10, 2014 Cheque is English, and pretty much universal in countries that were part of the British Empire - later Commonwealth. Much like the use of the letter 'S' instead of the American English preference of 'Z' in words like customise. Either way, cheques are almost a thing of the past in Australia. Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) has made the requirement for the Los cheque book obsolete. Bob Sent from my tablet thingy!
Krazy Kruizers Posted March 10, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 10, 2014 We still get Traveler cheques at our bank and still take them on cruises. Luckily HAL still cashes them considering HAL doesn't have any ATM machines.
