As an Adult who likes to play Poker, should I skip

My Family wants to go on the Disney Fantasy Cruise but since there is no Casino on-board, I really don't want to go. Especially if I want something to do at night while kids are sleeping.

What else can an adult do at night besides having a drink?

There are bars, adult entertainment, adult restaurants, quizzes, Films, spa, gym, and whilst not your game there is.......bingo....

If poker and a casino is a dealbreaker then do not go, but most people will finds a lot to interest them.

Seriously? You would skip a family vacation because you can't play poker at night? Do you play poker every night now? If you would rather play poker than go on a family vacation, I would suggest you send your family on the The Fantasy for the week while you head to Vegas.

Disney cruises have the same types of things other boats have, other than the casinos. I do think that the Disney sports bars are a little better than others, but basically you have the same options as other boats.

Depends on how late at night you want to be out doing something. The clubs for adults close up by midnight and then the ship is dead.

And the entertainment in the clubs can sometimes be ....how can I put this delicately.....boring. They'll have a 70's night...wow, who wants to relive THAT? Along with other "themed" nights or a band that can't get a gig anyplace else.

Yes...we took our kids....but I'm lucky in that I like to sit out on the balcony and read late at night......

I was about to say that at least with no casino, I save money, but then I remembered that the Disney cruises cost a lot more to begin with.

Book the cruise and make sure you get the cabana at castaway cay. And book every possible amenity that you know your family would love. I'm talking spa appointments, princess tea, bibbidi, bobbidi, boutique (if you have little girls). You get the point... Then plan on spending every moment of that week while they are awake being the husband/dad they could have ever wanted. go into it thinking spoiling your family with this vacation

Then start up a cruise meet, on here, cruise critic, DIS boards anywhere that cruisers are likely to go and let them know you're interested in possibly a few nights of your favorite brand of poker.

You may get a few nights of poker in with other cruisers , you might even win some cash. But your family gets face time with you and some awesome memories to go with it. you also might not get a single night of poker and more sleep than you normally handle. There's the gamble..

unless the stakes are too high for you. your family still wins.

You can perhaps get up a poker game in your own. Check the roll call for your cruise for any poker fans and bring along cards and chips.

It's a deal breaker for me so we all go on NCL.....

Yep. That's when I used to walk around and take pictures....no people getting in the way.

I'm not saying I don't like Disney. I'm going on them again in 2014...out of San Juan...but the last two times I was on Disney were both for weddings, and this time is with a group of friends who booked first. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't be going on any more Disney cruises. I've gone 12 times so far, the others were for my kids. The last time I took my son on a cruise, he chose the cruise line and we went on the newer Carnival Magic. He wanted RCCL, but I won't go until I can afford one of the really awesome aft balconies, overlooking the pool where they do the shows.

What ship were you on? The main night club has been opening till 2:00am every night, but first and last night when it's open till 1:00am on my cruises. I've cruised DCL 17 times, only two younger then 18, so spent lots of time in the night club. It's not packed, but the night club isn't closed at midnight, now the other adult bars do close at midnight, but main one is open till 2:00am

The only ship I haven't been on is the Fantasy.

The San Juan cruise next year will be my 13th...

And you have to remember that you're a LOT younger than me and the OP.

The theme nights and bands aren't all that appealing, and the lounge singers/piano players are boring. The Pub isn't so bad.

But on the Dream, there was never anyone in any of the clubs.

If you're traveling with a group of friends/relatives who all want to hang out and have fun, it wouldn't be so bad...or if you met people your own age. But the advice I gave (other than the exact closing times) still applies to the OP.

oh I didn't mean anything, by my post, hope you didn't take it that way. I just wanted the right info out there. That there was a nightclub open later then 12:00am. And I do know that I am younger, but really on all my cruises age never matter. I found people my age who didn't like the theme nights and older people who loved them, different strokes for different folks, age never really mattered. I just wanted the OP to know that there was one bar open till 2:00am, just incase I know older folks who were closing the bar down.

they are pretty dead, but some cruise have more people staying up late then others. I've been on cruise where no one was in the club by 1:00am and also others where we were closing the night club down.

People I met onboard were all between ages 18-70

Wow. I'm 29 and like to stay out late at night. One benefit to Rccl is their late club stays open usually till around 4am. I'm still sailing Disney but that is a little bit of a let down

Don't tell anyone, but there is a secret poker game every night at 10. It's at the Captain's cabin. To go there you have to do the special "Disney knock" on the door, that's the only way they'll let you in. Only the ship's Purser can give you the secret Disney knock for the week, just ask him after you slip him a $20. Try it...

I find this hard to believe but I'm pretty skeptical about a lot of things I read here.

As to boring at night, some cruises are more energetic than others. It depends on the demographics on who is on board, the time of the year and length of the cruise. Some have almost killed me with night time activities and some I've been to bed early. For some reason, it seems like the Princess cruises I've been on have been pretty boring with a lot of clubs closing at 10 or so.

yes the disney ships are pretty dead late at night...

on my last cruise, it wasn't a problem as i was traveling with my early to bed mom and sister..

but when i'm with DH, it's annoying...we're night owls and really enjoy having a place to go for a cup of coffee and a cake late at night...

the only late night food option on disney ships is room service....not at all what i have in mind...

our next cruise is on the allure where there are 24 hour food venues! i can't wait!!!

Absolutely an amazing ship. Great food, great shows, but service was far less than stellar on both times we cruised on her. A real shame it ruined our cruise.

When you say 'family' do you mean large family or small family group? If it is a bigger group, can you not just organize a 'kids are asleep, time for poke' game?

We do this at almost every family gathering at home, I'd imagine we'd do it on a cruise too.

Do you have a casino at every vacation you go on?

There are many opportunities to gamble on DCL ships...

bingo;)

OP we always enjoy a casino onboard too. Haven't looked at the Fantasy's schedule, but Nassau does have casinos. There are plenty of DCL sailings that dock there that might offer a compromise while the rest of family does something else (i.e. Atlantis dolphin swim?)
