sassy12 Posted March 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2013 We're doing a land tour of Ireland and are thinking of going to Barcelona the day the tour ends. We would be spending three nights in Barcelona prior to a transatlantic cruise back to the U.S. We are looking at the best way to get from Dublin to Barcelona. We've never traveled by ourselves in Europe so any help would be appreciated. Also, I'm not familiar with European airlines but understand that the luggage fees can be quite substantial. We would probably have two large suitcases and two carryons since we'll be traveling in Ireland in early November and will need warmer clothes than for the cruise. Thanks for any help provided. Cotswold Eagle Posted March 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2013 It's dangerous to generalise, of course, but your best bet is likely to be flying via London on Britsih Airways (on a through ticket, don't book each leg separately), which means you will have one free bag each, assuming you are flying economy (it's not clear if you meant two large bags each or in total, or how many in your party!) - a second bag on BA will cost $60, each bag is subject to usual weight limits - you will see flights on Aer Lingus - they charge per bag and have a restricting TOTAL weight limit, after which they charge per kg - make sure both legs are on BA operated flights, the first leg may show a BA code, but be an Aer Lingus flight - if you see cheap Ryanair flights, be aware that what they call Barcelona is often up to 100km away from the actual Barcelona airport (and they have fees for baggage and just about everything else) But you will need to look up some flights for you dates and see how it works out. Mairnealach Posted March 11, 2013 #3 Share Posted March 11, 2013 Hi, According do their website, Aer Lingus do not operate direct flights to Barcelona in November. Ryanair's flights are not yet loaded in their reservation system for November. When they are loaded, you would need to check whether on your date of travel there are Ryanair flights to Barcelona's main airport, Barcelona El Prat, or if they fly to Girona Barcelona or Reus Barcelona. Girona and Reus airports are both around 100kms from Barcelona. You would also need to check the cost of Ryanair's baggage fees. Then compare Ryanair to flying with British Airways via London. Rare VMax1700 Posted March 19, 2013 #4 Share Posted March 19, 2013 The Aer Lingus winter schedules have not been loaded yet. On most routes they are only loaded up to October 27th. As far as I remember they upload winter schedule in April and they will probably be flying at least one flight daily to Barcelona El Prat airport BCN. Mairnealach Posted March 19, 2013 #5 Share Posted March 19, 2013 Aer Lingus flights to Barcelona are now in their reservation system for all of November. They operate either one or two direct flights daily, depending on the day of the week.
TERRIER1 Posted March 21, 2013 #6 Share Posted March 21, 2013 Aer Lingus flights to Barcelona are now in their reservation system for all of November. They operate either one or two direct flights daily, depending on the day of the week. We flew JFK to Barcelona on Aer Lingus. You switch in Dublin. You are allowed to have an extended layover of up to two weeks. You might want to call Aer Lingus and check it out. We did this on our return from Lisbon to NYC. You baggage is considered checked through so you don't have to pay the extra baggage charge on the continental leg. Also, on the way home you pre-clear customs/immigration in Dublin which is way better than at JFK.
