Cunard Dress Code change: Formal and Informal

WOW! Toga Night! that would be great fun! Not sure it would be something Cunard would encourage, but it might be a loss leaded (expense of sheets vs bar revenue).

My guess is that a Toga Night might be more fun than a blah blah formal night ball .

I'm sure, that while the British are much more formal than the Romans, even in the day that Rome ruled the world, and the toga parties were all of the rage.......that today, my wonderful friends from the land of where the" White Star" Service was formed, might rightly call the evening....the "Changing of the Sheets Ball".

This, of course, would be limited to the Grills, as given to all of the passengers on one night, could result in............gasp.........an orgy!

Heaven forbid!!

See how the change of the rules of Formal, Semi-Formal, and Elegant Casual, which have now turned in to Formal and Semi Formal..........have almost turned the dress code......after 6PM, into something that is utterly barbaric!

S......we were doing so well with the reversible tux!:D

Such implications I did not consider. -S.

Q1 - the answer is most definitely no. You are not going to be shunned. The atmosphere on board a "real Cunard ship" is considerably more easy going and relaxed than these boards would imply. It's your honeymoon - get out there and enjoy it.

Have an absolutely wonderful time - I can think of no better way to spend a honeymoon. Don't forget to come back and tell us all about it. But beware, you could be about to enter married life with a serious "Cunard habit". It is extremely addictive.

Cruachan sir…. (said in that loud Regimental Sgt Major voice)

You sir are an absolute cad and a bounder… Bounder I say sir….

You are a cad and a bounder.

Shocked, shocked I say, I am shocked that you could ask newly weds to log onto a public forum and tell the world all about their HONEYMOON!!!!!!!

Have you been sniffing around the discarded corks from the decanted port? Have you completely lost control of your senses sir?

Whatever possessed you??

Shocked, I am both shocked and appalled that this question was asked. Go wash your mouth out with a bar of pussers hard**!!!

I also note how you are still sneaking in not so subtle requests for an upgrade to a Q1 berth!!

A grill suite for a cad??

A suite for someone that asks such a question!!!

You sir should be confined in steerage where you belong. Confined in a single cabin with 150% supplement weighting.

On a serious note..

Balls

Themed Balls to be precise and I am still confused about these events. My wife and I come from a small, traditional village where there is still that communal atmosphere. If there is a fancy dress celebration then most families will join in the fun and dress accordingly.

I thought these themed nights were a novel way of passing an evening at sea where if passengers wanted they could wear fancy dress and enjoy an evening where we could chat, dance or just socialise with our fellow passengers.

I am now led to believe that this fancy dress will be held in the ballroom where passengers only go if they want to dance… It is not a place for those that just want to dress up and enjoy an evening of relaxation and fun??

This is me voicing my thoughts and NOT making a statement, I am asking if folks can help clarify what this fancy dress is all about. I want my wife to get the most out of this cruise but I do not want to look silly (not the best wording) WE would not be able to dance but if fancy dress is seen as a bit of fun and the dance is an added bonus then I think my wife would like that, but if it is solely an evening of formal dance where a few passengers wear fancy dress then that is not something we want to do.

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Regards

John

John,

I plan on going to the ballroom even though I don't dance (bad knees and no rhythm). I still enjoy watching people dance. I think I will not have the proper "costume" for each ball but will do what I can and still go. I am having trouble envisioning the dress for the Australian Ball, however.

It's been an interesting read hey? She dresses fabulously but I'm just not comfortable doing what she does.

She has the body for it. If I wore something like that people would be throwing themselves off the side of the ship.

I just can't imagine wearing it even if I could. But is fun to watch others being brave.

An orgy? On a Cunard ship? Have you seen the average age on there?

Given the hilarity developing on this thread...I am unsure if you really want the information on "balls" and various themes ?

Assuming you do, the ballroom functions as a ballroom even on a themed night.Around 10-10 .30pm they have a dance demo by 2 of the dance team pros....that is the highlight of the evening. They may have a silly game as well or get willing dancers up to do the Officers Gavotte (a Cunard dance).

Sometimes those who have followed the theme are asked to go on the floor and walk round to show off their efforts of theme wear, and then the evening reverts to ballroom dancing for those who wish to participate.

The majority of guests will be wearing their regular formal clothes, although on QV recently, we had to have 2 circles of guests showing their masks off on the night these were the " theme "...that was a really unusually large number of guests participating.

We've never felt it was a party night unless it was out on deck in warm temperatures...and even then lots of guests won't participate as they can consider this to be more appropriate for the younger generation.

Even older in the Grills, something you hope to find out for yourself in September on QV, I believe. Or perhaps I've misunderstood your recent extremely subtle hints?

Sir Martin

PS Saint Peter, time is rolling on and the time for subtlety is now long gone for me.

QV, May 15 2013.

Q1. There is one left and it would be a pity to let it go to waste.

Ta ever so

At least trwo SUITES left: 6194 and 6203.

BTW, try Lord Peter rather than Saint Peter...wouldn't he need to shuffle off this Mortal Coil before becoming a saint? -Rather rusty on my theology, could be mistaken. No offense intended to Sir Martin's and Cruachan's BFF.

Hi White Heather,

Thank you very much indeed for taking the time to reply.

Trying to explain what I mean is very difficult when not having a face to face chat. From what you are saying am I right to deduce that the ballroom is a formal location used solely by passengers that enjoy ballroom dancing?:o

Ooh, so do think I'll get a choice? That would be good, as I can be a little picky.

Saint Peter is the only living saint. I'm sure we all agree, particularly those of us hoping for a rather spectacular upgrade, that this unprecented honour is richly deserved by this most able, but unassuming, man.

And it only cost him a fiver (plus a few random noughts).

Thank you very much for taking the time to post this much appreciated picture. The appears to be a lot of 'jaw, jaw' as opposed to........ forward, side, together (can't think of anything funny) :o:o

Going by the photo posted, it appears to be more like the gathering of guests for the invite only events like gold or platinum loyalty get togethers that also happen in the ballroom.

From my experience, the ballroom is exactly that most nights....a place to dance distinct from sitting jawing or chatting. Some people like the music while they chat but I think it would be perhaps over loud for conversation purposes . I don't have my computer at home for the moment but if I had I would be able to let you see photos of the ballroom in full swing with lots of dancers on the floor...dancing...not talking...the photo posted shows the gathered guests just chatting while they wait for the captain to come and address the group IMO.

We're regular dancers ourselves so if we found the ballroom was given over to chatting groups as compared to dancing opportunities, we would be on another cruiseline . The gentlemen hosts would also be excess to requirements!

Hope this clarifies things more.the ballroom is a convenient place for more special things like recitals etc during the day or dance classes etc etc but at night it has an orchestra and a singer for dancing .

Forgot to add the fencing classes, the line dancing, white glove afternoon tea service...they get full use of the facility virtually all the time. The special invite do's are are all held there to accommodate the high numbers of repeat bookers and the officers usually attend as well as the Captain.

It's also used for a range of other purposes, inter alia: the assembly point for shore excursions, a venue for bingo, on Queen Victoria it's the instructional area for fencing classes, and I have also seen it used for sundry other daytime activities.

Hi Heather,

That picture did indeed help to confuse me and I understand what you are saying about the dancing but is the music that loud?

No not really but it is an orchestra that plays in the ballroom and people do sit together and have a drink and chat with friends but you would be looking for seats away from the bandstand to diminish the noise a bit if you want to chat. There is an off shoot part of ballroom area across the dividing corridor which runs from the deck 2 dining level aft to the theatre at the front. If you can seat yourselves there in preference to beside the dance floor you can hear the music less but would not see the dancing or " theme festivities" without leaving your seat to cross the corridor to view these.

The floor is quite large so the surrounding seating spreads around it and might be far enough away from the band at the main open entry to the ballroom if you sit on the slightly raised part as you come in.It is about 2steps higher than the floor. This raised area also continues at one side of the ballroom seating (port I think) so you could avoid most of the band noise by sitting up there too. Hard to judge as amount of noise tolerated is personal to everyone. You can roughly see the raised area with seating in the far part of the photo we were discussing..

On one night the theatre band and the ballroom orchestra join up in the ballroom to play together...that can be loud!
