Rare terrydtx Posted March 24, 2013 #26 Share Posted March 24, 2013 Because its perfectly legal? Because a certified BC+photo ID is acceptable for land/sea entries into the US, as well as for all WHTI compliant counties. This not totally true for all land entries from Canada, you have to have a valid US passport or Passport Card unless you live in 4 certain border states that offer enhanced driver licenses. I found this out last year when I tired to go into Canada in Niagara NY being from Alabama and not have taken my passport on that trip.
dwjoe Posted March 24, 2013 #27 Share Posted March 24, 2013 If your cruise is a closed loop Caribbean itinerary you will not need a passport only a government issued picture ID (Drivers Lic) and certified copy of a birth certificate is needed to board. Closed loop means it originates and returns to the same US port. Here is a link that explains this for NCL Passport NCL LINK That is a 3rd party non-NCL link. While it may be correct, it is better to get this information from the source. http://www.ncl.com/faq#documentation
Rare sparks1093 Posted March 26, 2013 #28 Share Posted March 26, 2013 No...do not throw the expiring passport away. It has to be sent in with the passport renewal application if you want to renew. If you can't send in your expired or expiring passport you have go through the process of applying for a new passport. Although adult US passports expire after 10 years, they can be used as part of the renewal passport application documentation for up to 15 years after they were issued. And in addition an expired passport is still valid proof of citizenship. If you truly don't want to hold on to it then you should dispose of it by burning or shredding.
