Question for Andy about shuttle service in Venice

Hello Andy!

We are boarding the Quest in Venice on September 21, 2013 for the 7 day "Adriatic Explorer." I was wondering whether Azamara will make available (for sale or for free) a shuttle from the ship to St Marks during the day of embarkation. We are arriving on an overnight flight from the USA that morning but once we board the ship, drop off our luggage and eat lunch.. maybe we will have the energy to venture into Venice for an hour or two before the ship sails..

I don't want to go straight from the airport because a shower and change of clothes is definitely needed after an overnight flight.;)

I just wanted to know if it was a possibility. Thanks in advance for your answer!

Water Taxis run from the dock to St Marks at regular intervals I do not think that Azamara or any cruise line are allowed to run shuttles.

If you dock at San Basilio, which is where Quest docked last August when I was on it, you walk 5 mins to the vaparetto station and get the boat along to right in front of St Marks in about 5-10 minutes. Really easy.

Thank you both for your answers about how to get from the ship to St Marks.:) Not sure we will have enough "get up and go" after our overnight flight but if we do I'm glad I have the information.

Thanks again!

Yes.. I totally agree! Venice is a treasure but a treasure we have thankfully been to a few times before. So if we don't see it this time around there's always next time. :)

I wish the boat was leaving a bit later that day because our flight lands at 11am and by the time we get to the ship and can get ready to go out again it will be close to 2pm. That leaves around 2 hours to go and come back. Hmm.. I think I just talked myself into it!

Plenty of time in those next 7 days to catch up on some sleep.;)

I have already looked this up since my cruise ends there on the 21st and I knew both Journey and Quest would be there that day. They are happily both scheduled to dock at San Basilio.

Last time I was docked there on the Journey I found it was a really easy walk to St. Marks and didn't even need the vaparetto.

I also found the neighboorhood around the dock area was really scenic to walk around in. In my previous visit to Venice I had never made it to that section so it was a bonus to cut through there.

I so look forward to going back.

Hi Daytongirl!

How funny that you are getting off the Quest on the 21st. I will have to look on a map to see if San Basilio is the same berth that we disembarked on a past AZ cruise on. In 11/10 we docked in Venice the afternoon before disembarkation day so we had time that night for a visit before it got too chilly and dark. We did walk along the water for most of the way to St Marks for about 20 minutes I think.

I'm sooooo glad that I found out that the Quest is leaving from San Basilio because I thought it was leaving from Stazione Marittima and that's where I had researched how to get there by bus from VCE.

Would anyone know the easiest way besides the ship transfers how to get from VCE to San Basilio?

Thanks so much!!:)

Hello Sleep7 -

On a turn-around day, Azamara does not offer shuttle buses but there is actually no need to do so in Venice since there is a public boat station by the San Basilio Terminal area that offers transportation for one or two Euros. Also, one can also walk to St. Mark's Square, which is about 30 minutes or you can do some shopping along the way and spend hours!

Thank you for selecting the Azamara Quest and our best wishes for an exceptional vacation this coming September!

By the way, Andy is aboard Celebrity and I'm sure we all wish him a wonderful vacation with his family,

Best regards,

Hi Bill!

Thanks for your post back about how to get from the ship to St Marks on the day of embarkation.:)

Now I'm a bit confused though.. before I saw your post I called Azamara customer service to double check that the ship would be at San Basilio and they actually told me that the ship is leaving from Venice Marittima Port NOT San Basilio. Can you confirm which one it is? Thanks so much for finding out for us and have a lovely evening.

Hello Sleep7 -

I'm sorry to have confused you and will check with our itinerary planner for the exact location of the pier. In the reply that I received, it showed a map/diagram with the public boat terminal next to San Basilio Pier so I made the assumption that that would be your pier.

I will get back to you as soon as I have the exact pier location. Again, sorry for this information snafu.

Best regards,

......we start our out of Venice a week later on the Quest so we'll miss seeing you.

We really enjoyed the dinners we had in the Discoveries Restaurant with you as well as meeting you at odd times during the cruise. You're lucky too in that Richard will be the Hotel Director on the Journey with you

Sam & Lindsey.

Attached are pics of Quest last August at San Basilio berth - ship positioned left on photos taken from the air shortly leaving Venice. Regular Azamara guests will be familiar with just how central in most ports Azamara dock. We walked with a good map to St Marks through beautiful alleyways, alongside small less populated canal paths...priceless. Please be aware that to access the ship/security on the return you will need photo ID with you in addition to your cruise card. We just used our UK driving licences rather than taking passports with us - less bulky and risky! Not all ports require this, some just need to see your cruise card.
