Internet Use for Platinum Level Members

Does anyone know the restrictions for the complimentary internet use aboard ship for platinum level members?

Can you use the computers 24/7 or are there restrictions on the times this perk is available?

Thanks, Ilene

The internet is free for platinum level passengers 24/7 - the trick is getting a connection and getting logged on. Because the ships use a satellite connection sometimes it is verrrrrrrrry slow or even non-existing. But that being said - it is available 24/7.

There are no restrictions for using the internet cafe computers. However, you would have to pay to use your own laptop connected to the wireless network.

The computers are available 24/7. The way it works is that the charge will show up on your onboard account either once a week if it's a longer cruise or the final night of a shorter cruise before disembarkation, the internet charges are credited to your account. Be sure to check your account from time-to-time and add up the amount that you should be credited so that you can quickly identify whether you've been credited with the correct amount when you get your final bill.

As stated, the internet is via satellite which as you get more out-to-sea can get very spotty or not connect at all. Even when it's working well, it's pretty slow, particularly if you're used to a broadband connection. This is not just Princess but other cruiseships as well. The satellites don't cover open ocean areas well since they are focused on areas with population. (Not many people out to sea.)

Also, one thing to note is that the internet computers are essentially terminals with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. You will not have access to the CPU so you won't be able to upload or download files, or save anything to disk/CD.

You can live on those computers all day and all night; no charge.

I found the connection on the Star in the Med last summer to be excellent. The one on the DIamond was horrible...a waste of my vacation time...

Unlimited access for Platinum members over 18. My daughter hates that...LOL...

On the Coral last month, internet usage charges were posted to my account each day with an offsetting credit. I recall that the cutoff was at midnight each day. By the way, printing was also free for Platinum members. We were dealing with some medical issues back home so were using email quite frequently...total internet costs exceeded $100 which were credited back...a nice perk!

When we were on the Regal in March/April they had a different system than we had seen before. We had to get cards for 1 hour increments from the Purser's Desk. When we used them up we had to return them to the Purser's Desk for new cards. There wasn't any charge for them for Elite Passengers and no limit to the number of times that we could get new cards. Although they did put a charge on our accounts and then remove them at the end of the trip.

However, not long after leaving the Panama Canal, one morning we had very strong winds that hit the satellite for the internet so we didn't have ANY internet on the ship for the rest of the trip. The crew was particularly upset because they could not contact their families by phone OR internet. When we saw the ship leaving San Diego for the next cruise after they dropped us off (April 8) it still wasn't fixed.
