lkmamom Posted June 17, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2005 I was just wondering....for those of you that have already cruised Europe, did you tip (for example) the room service with American dollars or Pounds or Euros?? Thanks for your help Linda
Nanatravel Posted June 17, 2005 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2005 Tipping (if not automatic) should be in US dollars on board ship and tours. Purchases on shore could be in local currency or by credit card. Bon Voyage
cnmiranda Posted June 17, 2005 #3 Share Posted June 17, 2005 For actual room service we tipped in dollars though I'm sure the ship's staff wouldn't mind any other currency as it's more valuable:)
calikak Posted June 17, 2005 #4 Share Posted June 17, 2005 I asked at the purser's desk if it's better to do cash tips in US dollars or British pounds. They said dollars because the staff gets paid in dollars. It didn't make any sense to me at all--what does the currency used to pay their salary have to do with the best currency to tip them in?--but that's what they told us. lkmamom Posted June 17, 2005 Author #5 Share Posted June 17, 2005 Thanks everyone for your responses. I would agree with you Beth, I would think that the staff would rather have the ponds or euros. It just helps to know ahead of time what cash to have available. I was reading above where cruisers were charged extra for room service, did anyone encounter that on their recent cruise? critterchick Posted June 17, 2005 #6 Share Posted June 17, 2005 I shouldn't think the currency would matter, as long as you give the equivalent; i.e., if you're going to tip one Euro, you would instead tip $1.25 US. I think they are equally negotiable.
calikak Posted June 17, 2005 #7 Share Posted June 17, 2005 We weren't charged for room service on the Golden last month...except when we ordered champagne, they didn't give us free champagne, but that's not really a new development! :D
Smiles3usa Posted June 17, 2005 #8 Share Posted June 17, 2005 Room service accepts ANY currency. I remember one morning which we ordered just coffee, and I had nothing smaller than a $20. I gave the service guy a 2 euro coin. He seemed pleased. Me, I felt kinda sheepish, it looked something like a big quarter (those susan b anothony dollars that i hate!) So whatever you have, if you give it, will be appreciated.
