GloriaF Posted April 25, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 25, 2013 We are off Ruby Princess on Friday, May 9, 9A to 7P, and are wondering it there are interesting local sites for diy travelers? I notice most of the posts have to do with getting to Aix or Nice or Eze, and we did these things a few years ago with a few couples on a private tour. This time we planned on just sight-seeing on our own and possibly going back to the ship early since we will have a port nearly every day for the next 15 days. Any advice will be greatly appreciated and considered!!

Recall recently reading about a brand spanking new museum opening http://www.marseille-provence.info/marseille-marseilles/what-to-see-tourist-attractions/397-the-mucem.html There's a HOHO bus that can take you to Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral on the hill. Vieux Port is lovely on a warm day.

KirkNC Posted April 26, 2013 #4 Share Posted April 26, 2013 You might want to check out Rick Steve's Med book, it gives some great ideas as well as how to get around.
golfer1902 Posted April 27, 2013 #5 Share Posted April 27, 2013 There are a couple of local web sites in English that might help: http://www.marseille-provence.info/ (Marseille and surroundings, very detailed) http://marseillecityofculture.eu/ (Only covers Marseille, smaller and easier to manage)

Touristbay Posted April 29, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 29, 2013 Our ship docked in the commercial harbour in Marseille, RCCL were charging $5 per person for a bus transfer , we opted to go by taxi as there was four of us for 20 euros. Lovely harbour on arrival. We opted to take the touristtrain 'le petit train' http://www.petit-train-marseille.com/ , we took the circuit 1 which takes you to the Notre Dame de la Garde, the views of Marseille are fantastic and all of the circuit tour was very enjoyable . It cost 8 euros each

These are a new addition to Marseille. The reviews seem good and the tours are apparently in French and English ... I just hope they are less smoky and smelly than the tuk tuks you find in India - Marseille already has enough of a problem with exhaust fumes. SansSouci1 Posted May 3, 2013 #10 Share Posted May 3, 2013 Is the Petit Train "hop-on-hop-off" or do you simply ride along the entire circuit. I see they have a 30 min stop midway. Can you stop and get on another train later? Is this the only stop? Thank you!
AngloinProvence Posted May 5, 2013 #11 Share Posted May 5, 2013 There are two routes for the petit train, one through the Old Town and one up to Notre Dame de la Garde on the top of the hill. Both leave from the Old Port and both have just one stop for about half an hour on their respective routes -- it's not a HOHO service. The Old Town one stops at the Vieille Charite and Notre Dame stops at - guess where? - Notre Dame. In both cases you can get off and catch a later train to return to the Old Port. More details in this full guide to how to get around Marseille. http://www.marseille-provence.info/m...marseille.html
