2 days in Montevideo - what to do?

If you have not been to Montevideo before and have most or all of two days there, my suggestion (admittedly a rather obvious one) is to spend one day touring around the city, and the 2nd day going to whichever of the attractions outside the city is of most interest to you.

If walking 2 miles or more is ok, then touring the downtown part of the city on foot from the dock is very practical. There are many impressive buildings. Our one excursion outside the city, on our second single-day port visit, was to the Estancia La Rabida, which we enjoyed. However, others might prefer one of the other well-advertised trips out of the city.

I am sailing with you.

It sure is a beautiful city and there is quite a bit of heritage here.

For our trip I am looking into organizing a trip out to a gaucho ranch for the first day, which would include transport to the ranch a demo, food, and wine. Friends did it last year and so many people raved about it. Just waiting to hear more back from them before I post on the roll call.

Is this something you may be interested in?

Too bad about less time in Buenos Aires. Maybe a matter of dock fees or dock capacity? Monteivdeo is much smaller. I spent a full day there, when I got off a cruise and did personal travel before rejoining the ship (Star Princess) in Ushuaia. It has its points of interest, especially if you like to shop. I did not get to see the Graf Spree memorial marking the famous naval battle. The Princess site shows a number of tours, including to vineyards (Uruguay produces some good wine) and Punta del Este (mainly big hotels and casinos, one friend said, though I haven't been).

You could, of course, do any of these on your own. If you read up in advance, you could design your own walking tour of much of the central city. And use a taxi or bus to go further out. We had a guide, since my wife's cousin worked at the Brazilian embassy and provided us a driver for a couple of hours.

I'd start by reading up on Montevideo. Maybe download the chapter on Montevideo from the Lonely Planet guide book.
