Steak house. Is it worth it?

We have more than $2K in OBC for our upcoming cruise--I've never seen sales like that before! You do realize though, that your OBC isn't a "freebie," right? It's YOUR money! :D

Yes, this was the most we have received, as well (almost $1k for two rooms). My DH and I are going on the Dream and then putting the kids on a plane to go to camp and will get on board the Sensation on Sunday; I was hoping I could use any remainder of our OBC to purchase Carnival Cash (I forget what they call their ship dollars), but I was told that if you don't use it, you lose it....so we have lots of plans for spending it! #1 - Steakhouse!

Yay ~ 11 days to sailing!

Yay you! :D First of all, I think you'll find that if it's from price drops, it IS refundable. Check your account once it's posted and it should be marked as refundable. I know the small print says it's nonrefundable, but many of us can attest to the fact that it's always been refundable. Second, if for some reason it isn't, you don't have to spend on anything you don't want to. You can withdraw it through the casino--just transfer what you want to withdraw to your player's account via a slot machine, pull a time or two and then go to the cage and tel them you want to cash out your player's account. You could then put that cash on your S&S of your second cruise. :D

Where is the bowing down icon when you need it? THAT is brilliant! In the past, we have received refunds in the form of a check on the last day for unused OBC, but I was informed from Carnival that because this was an Early Saver rate, it was all "use it or lose it"; Seriously, I was trying to figure out how we could get around it and this is just the ticket! We're not really drinkers, we will buy the soda package and our tips will be covered, and the steakhouse, but it was a significant amount and I just didn't want to be "throwing it away"....the casino idea will be just the ticket! I have to say, I love Cruise Critic for just these reasons. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise, Quilting Cruiser -- we will benefit from it! :)

To each his own and your mileage may vary, but we like the steakhouse on the Miracle so much we will be eating there twice on our upcoming Splendor cruise. I've already made the reservations!

The food was great, we had excellent service. It was well worth the upcharge IMO.

I had the Ahi Tuna Tartare (sooo yummy!)

The tomato and Gorgonzola salad

The surf and turf (bot the lobster and the filet were excellent)

And the chocolate sampler.

I'll be ordering the same thing this time, but I might try the spinach salad and the cheesecake. I have to remember to ask for a doggy bag for the cheesecake. I've heard they will do that!

It is well worth the$ We always go up at least once a cruise. If you decide to do it,try to figure out the time of sunset. They will probably put you at a table to look out over the sea at sunset.

Wrong ,I had em when they were FREE in the MDR .

Carnival use to serve the same steaks in the MDR that are now served in the Steak house.

Back to the topic at hand .

That's laughable. I'm not aware of any mass market cruise line that ever served Aged USDA Prime beef in the MDR. You pay $40+ on land just for it now, and that's usually a la carte (no sides included).

Is it worth it? For me, yes indeed. However, I don't expect all to appreciate it the same. Some don't see higher quality cuts as worthy of an upcharge, while others do.

There is no way the steaks they use are properly aged. When asked they couldn't even tell me how long they were aged for. I was just told "to our specification". The steak wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't aged enough to really matter.

Laugh it up then :D , I actually enjoyed the steaks in the MDR back then.

It's by choice, I have mine .

Your Wrong..... The food on cruises used to be nothing like it is now. Very good and much fancier. No cruise line serves the food like they used to. Never had to upsale because you got it already.

Not sure what your comments have to do with my post?

I have been there 3 times . I had lobster all 3 times . Each time the lobster was a smaller portion. The taste was the same as the MDR and size was the same. 2 tails . The service was greet. It reminds me of the service I got back in the early 90 in the MDR. If you have money go for it . For steaks I can cook prime meat at home or anything, it is just nice to be waited on. Scot

After reading all of these glowing reports on how worth it it is to go to the steak house, I feel sad. Our visit to the steak house on the Glory this past March was NOT worth it. None (3) of our steaks were cooked the way we requested them. We didn't complain, we just know we will save our money next time.

Would you do this at home? Since they are cooked to order, no doubt there would be a wait for the replacement, but I would not want to pay extra and then not get it how I wanted it.

How does the $35 price compare to a nice restaurant for you? There's a really nice Steak place downtown where I live with aged beef and the prices are almost identical...so I can't see spending that much extra for a meal when I've already paid for dinner.

On the Glory last summer we were in Halifax and stopped and had lobsters the size of your forearm - so good. Almost worth cruising there again just for lobster. I think he charged like $2-5 a lb.

Here's the thing...people's experiences differ for many different reasons. That's why I take people's opinions with a grain of salt--both good and bad--and form my own judgment. This holds true for pretty much everything in life.
