We will be in New Orleans getting off a cruise on Sunday Sept. 15th. Our flight doesn't leave until around 6pm....what should we do for the day?

I was thinking about trying to arrange transport of our luggage to the airport and maybe take a taxi somewhere...where should we go for a few hrs to get a taste of NO?? French Quarter? Bourbon Street?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I posted under your other thread in Gulf Coast Departures. Hope it helps.

Would stay downtown--French Quarter or a museum in the Warehouse District like the D-Day Museum. But probably just stroll the Quarter, have a cocktail in the afternoon at the Napoleon House or the Monteleon Hotel after a nice lunch.

Thanks...any idea how long we should allow for taxi back to the airport?

If you take your luggage to the airport you may not be able to check it in until 3 or 4 hours prior to the flight.

We went here: http://www.neworleansschoolofcooking.com/

Had our luggage with us. They let us put our luggage in the back of the classroom during the cooking demonstration, and while we shopped in their store afterwards.

Goggle Maps says it's about 21 minutes from the Hilton Riverside/Harrah's Casino to the airport. Personally, I have never made it in less than half an hour. So I would definitely allow 30 - 45 minutes on average, but the trip can take over an hour during rush hours.

Haven't been to N.O. since Katrina, but in 2006 we enjoyed St. Louis Cathedral, the Aquarium, the D-Day Museum, a cruise on the stern-wheeler Natchez, a trolley ride through the Garden District, and Audubon Park.

Of course, check what's open on Sunday!

Thanks...I didn't think about things not being open on Sunday.

Katrina was in 2005.

I've been in NO many times and have also cruised out of there. Wonderful city.

I have no idea if available, but with being short on time, there may be a bag service available for an extra charge.

It would be an easy day to take the Riverfront street car to the end, then start walking back along Decatur, this would take you by the Cathedral, French Market, NPS visitor center. And some good food and shopping options. :) Easy 3 block walk up to Bourbon, if of interest?

I would be heading to the airport by 4:30pm or a little earlier. This can be a bogged down airport with security and lines, if you have checked luggage. Very busy on cruise ship days.
