Happy Hour

I just read on another thread that one HAL ship has dropped Happy Hour pricing. Anyone know which ship it is? The poster said that maybe they were trying to encourage people to buy the drink package. Big stretch from getting a couple of buy one get one for $1 to getting the whole drink package per day...

I think that was on the Amsterdam.

There is no way we would buy the drink package -- too many restrictions. Plus we could never drink that many cocktails in a day.

We haven't gone to a Happy Hour in a long time. Seems like they were only from 4 - 5 on the ships we were on. We would rather have a drink before dinner. And again there were restrictions.

I do believe that Linda&Vern are correct and that it only lasted one night.

Golferboy18 - regardless of what Linda&Vern finds out, things are frequently different on Grand Voyages, this might be one. Time will tell.

Hey, I miss the warm sunshine (well hot sunshine0 we had on the PC cruise!

Hi. I was on the Amsterdam for a coastal last month with my evil twin. First day, no happy hour but as it was a turn-over day that was normal. Second day they announced there would be no more happy hours. By the third day the happy hour was re-instated and ran from 4-5 and 7-8. That made me happy.

Thanks for the update.

I sure wish that the Amsterdam had had Happy Hour from 7 - 8 when we were on her.

Because my booked cruise for 2014 will be my first w/HAL, though I have taken quite a few cruises with Princess, could you please tell me what does HAL's 'happy hour" consist of?

Happy Hour

For 1 hour you can buy a drink and get the second one for $1. It must be the same drink. There is a cap of $6.95. It can not include the premium alcohols. For instance -- we like Grey Goose -- it costs $6.95 (plus gratuity) on the rocks -- but since it is considered a premium alcohol -- it is not included in Happy Hour.

It is usually held in the Ocean Bar and Crow's Nest. One time when we were on the Nieuw Ansterdam it was held in the Explorers Lounge. Some ships may even have a late night one in the Casino and/or Northern Lights.

It is never offered on Embarkation day.

Check your daily "On Location" program for the times and places.

I was on the Veendam a week ago and each day (excluding embarkation day) the buy one drink, get another for a dollar special was in effect in both the Crow's Nest and the Ocean Bar from 4-5pm and again in the Crow's Nest only from 11pm to midnight. It was always listed in the daily paper.

Also, Happy Hour was held, (occasionally), in the Atrium Bar, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on my (our) recent Trans Panama Canal cruise onboard the Westerdam! ;) And it was busy!

I was very surprised there were no happy hours on the Rotterdam in April. I was told it was up to the individual ships. On the Prinsendam in December there was a happy hour in each and every venue, as well as at bingo and trivia. The Rotterdam is the only HAL ship we've been on that had no happy hour. I can't remember if there was one when we sailed her in 2011.

True, no Happy Hour for Rotterdam on our June 2012 Baltic cruise. I asked about it and was told that since passengers were mostly European (mainly Dutch), there was no need for it. They seemed willing to pay the going prices.

They did still have a "drink of the day" at special price.

So it seems to be all about money and up to the individual ships. We had Happy Hour on our Med/TA on Prisendam in Oct 2012. Others have reported Happy Hour on other ships lately, so this must be unique to the Rotterdam right now.

Happy Hour is not a big deal to us as we don't drink the same thing. Getting 2 drinks at the same time means the second one is melted ice by the time you get to it. Might work if it is wine, but not for mixed drinks.

I can remember on some of our cruises when they would have the Bingo in the Crow's Nest and have Happy Hour at the same time.

And the person in charge of the Bingo kept mentioning about Happy Hour to drum up some business.

Guess I missed that for 2 reasons.

1. -- we were at dinner during that time.

2.-- it was not listed on the front page of the old daily "Explorer" program -- I just checked mine.

Hi, I have seen people ask their server to bring the second drink later, when they are ready for it, so no melted ice!

On Eurodam in March the happy hour was in the Crows Nest daily and it was an absolute mess. They never had enough servers and it took forever to get drinks. I've never seen anything like it on HAL. We prefer cocktails in the Ocean Bar before dinner and we quickly returned to that routine so we didn't have to partake in the mess upstairs.

I don't know why they don't have a happy hour in the Atrium Bar. It seems that it always sits empty, and in fact usually was closed. Seems like a waste of space.

When we were on the Maasdam in Feb or March of 2012 (can't remember which month) -- we tried the Happy Hour at 4 PM in the Ocean Bar.

Same thing -- too few servers -- they could not handle the crowd. We would arrive a few minutes before 4 but no one took our our oder until 4:30 - 4:45 and then we waited another 15 minutes before the drinks were served. No hope of ordering a second round if we wanted to.

We haven't done one since then.

We were on the same cruise.

How were you able to get scotch for $8.95 during Happy Hour -- buy one and get the second one for $1? That is $2 over the limit price.

We inquired about our Grey Goose -- and told no.

The only reason that I knew that there was an (occasional) Happy Hour at the Atrium Bar was because I read it in the old daily 'Explorer' :) I think that it might have been listed on the section that could be torn off, which I did every day & kept it with me for reference! ;)
