Labadee & elephantiasis?

I was pretty excited about an upcoming cruise stopping in Labadee....until I heard a story this morning on NPR about elephantiasis in Haiti!!!!

What is everyone's thoughts on this? What is the risk cruise goers have catching this CONTAGIOUS parasitic infection?

Not to overreact but I am now super nervous about this port...

Maybe this will let you worry a little less. I got this little bit of info from the CDC website http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lymphaticfilariasis/epi.html .....

"Many mosquito bites over several months to years are needed to get lymphatic filariasis. People living for a long time in tropical or sub-tropical areas where the disease is common are at the greatest risk for infection. Short-term tourists have a very low risk."

That is why we always use bug spray, more to keep rid of those nasty beach sand nats, but, that deep forest stuff works on everything.

It has been hit or miss with the beach nats, one year we had them the next we didnt.

I just always use it.

Also when we zip line in Jamaica, we spray it on when in the forest.

You won't be there long enough to worry...and you'll be there in the daytime, in a pretty developed area, when mosquitoes aren't generally active.

If you were camping in the "wilds" for several days, concern would be prudent. That's not the case, so no need to worry!
