Instructions for elevators

As much as Europeans are annoyed at North Americans for not getting free water in the dining, has any one else been annoyed at Europeans' elevator etiquette?

MSC should post instructions for elevator use:

1. let people off before you get on

2. move out of the way if you are in the elevator and people behind you need to get off, if you have to set out of the elevator to make room, it won't leave without you

3 There are two buttons to press to get on the elevator, if you need to go up, press the up button, if you need to go down, press the down button, pressing both buttons at the same time does not get you to where you are going more quickly

4. and my biggest peeve, if you want to go up, get in an elevator going up, not down. there were too many times to count I would get on an elevator on floor five going up, and it was half full with people who got on a down elevator first then waited to go up. you will get to where you are going more quickly if you go from A to B rather than going from A to C then B

the busiest times when the elevators were more busy, it would help everyone if they used the elevators most efficiently.

But it would eliminate so much amusement :(

I'll let you into a little secret: If you hold in the button for the floor you want with the "close doors" button, simultaniously, until the doors have closed and the lift has started moving , your button press will overrdide ALL other button presses and take you staight to your destination. This is a source of amusement as you look at the peoples' faces as they whizz past their desired deck

This is a safety feature so that emergancy services can override the lift if they need to.

Alternatively you could book into the Yacht Club and use Your card to override all outside button calls which stops kids racing up stairs and pressing a button on every floor.

As a passing thought you can send irksome kids down from the YC ( deck15 ) to deck 4 by inserting your card and pressing number 4 deck just as you smartly step out before the doors close. THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO STOP THE LIFT UNTIL IT REACHES THE BOTTOM. This only applies to the two YC priority lifts , but it is good fun and they won't mess withyyou again

Its also interesting to see the looks on non- YC guests using the YC lifts as you slip your card into the slot inside the lift, but I always ask them which deck they want and press ther requirements as well, that's just good manners. The lift will then only stop at the decks you have requested and no others , unless another YC card is used on the ouside going in your direction.

I am way to impatient to wait for the lifts. All the time I am blessed with reasonable fitness I will try to use the stairs and leave them to those that need it.

Leaving the bar at 1am is an entirely different matter though

A great tip on "floor"+"close", just that it will be one of those great tips that might never be put to use.

When I am on cruise ship, I am on holiday and not attending emergency or hurrying to anywhere ;)

It works on just about any lift you care to use, not just lifts you use on holidays, multistorey car parks comes to mind

Lift (elevator) etiquette crosses cultural borders as well well as queuing etiquette.

Agree with all you say, except I have been guilty of #4 and I'll tell you why. On some ships, unless you get on the lift on a lower deck, you will not be able to get on because it will be full by the time it gets to you. This has happened to me several times, usually at a high peak time like when the show lets out and everyone it there at the same time. So I would get on one that went down a couple decks so I know I would be on it. By the time it gets to the bottom deck, it would fill up and the people that were on the deck I started on were still there with the disappointed looks on their faces when the door opens and they can't get on. Could I have stood on my original deck for a few minutes longer to wait for an empty lift, sure, but why?

if you are physically fit (as 70 % of user are) get your lazy butt out of the elevator and try the stairs. you may even feel better after your cruise has ended and may even have gained less weight. WOW----fell better, gain less weight---seems like a no brainer. but we all will see young, middle aged and even seniors that are in great physical condition in the elevators. sad but true

Great tip!!! I'll have to try the press and hold next time. I was wondering because there were a few instances where the elevator would just zip right past the floor I was waiting on.

I agree waiting in an orderly line, elevators and such should be an international policy, but apparently each area has it's deficiencies. Even being a fellow North American, specifically Canadian we have our own too.

What's that Aerosmith lyric, "Livin' it up while I'm goin' down"? I get it about going the oposite direction you want to go in. Many, many times in casino hotels if you are on the 10th floor for instance and you want to go down to the lobby the elevators are all full with those guests on floors above you. (Such as check-out time), So we push an UP elevator, get on, stay on till it goes to the top and starts going DOWN again. With luggage it's the only way. And ship elevators are so small anyway.....

You all have me worried now. I'll have DD in a buggy! But I won't be afraid to cut the ankles off someone with it, if they try to skip the queue! Thats a real pet hate of mine! :p

Queueing is not a universal thing. If you are going to travel overseas you have to accept that not all nationalities conform to what we consider manners or politeness.
