What happened to the daily "newspaper"?

Recommended Posts

Not sure where you heard this but it's wrong. RCL does not print the daily newspaper anymore or charge for it. and hasn't for quite some time. Saves tons of paper and everything that was in there or most everything you can see on your stateroom TV, or the internet if you use it, or your WiFi connection if you have one onboard. :)

It is not wrong you are wrong. As recently as last month I was on Adventure of the Seas and they were selling newspapers printed from the Internet (the Sun and the Times) They were expensive but quite popular with British cruisers in particular. They were doing this on my previous two cruises.

Just because RCL may not be doing this on their cruises out of the USA does not mean they are not doing it!

There was still daily trivia and Sudoku available in the library. So they'll still spend the money on these things that likely even fewer passengers are interested in (maybe because all they have to do is print 7 versions and they can use year round), but not the news?

I think I'm going to email Adam Goldstein to ask why.

I was just thinking this same thing. If it's just a matter of being 'informed' aren't Fox, CNN and HLN all available?
No on my MA cruise from Barcelona to Dubai no satellite news was available for 4 days! Thats right no Fox, CNN, BBC, HLN, or any news!!

I remember reading at the time they made the daily news digests akin to the Dodo bird, that the copyright fees alone were $250,000! I'm sure that was fleet wide, but that's not exactly couch change.

I don't think they were printing 3000 copies of the newspaper. There were maybe 20 or so in each language and you'd have to go early otherwise they'd be gone. But I think it's a generalization to say "everything" is on the stateroom tv. On our Oasis cruise, we had no idea who was leading the Tour de France. Or baseball standings. Or the stock market. We had to guess that George Zimmerman was declared innocent based on some nebulous tweets that we read scrolling across the bottom of CNN International.

Yes, if you want to pay $0.75 a minute for the internet, of course you can read all the news you want. Or buy an internet package and get it cheaper. Depends how much you need the news.

As the OP, I'm just disappointed it's no longer available. I'm not a news junkie where I have to know everything 24-7, but it'd be nice to know that the West coast hasn't fallen into the ocean or that the market hasn't tanked.

CNN and other news outlets are on my stateroom TV 24 hours a day. Get the baseball, football, basketball, PGA updates and breaking news everyday, also stock quotes, etc etc etc.. So if you are curious of world affairs and whatnot while you are on vacation there is nothing in the old copies of the "newspaper" that used to be printed out that you can't find on your stateroom TV.:)

OK Marie I'm now humbled and take one step back.:) Sailing out of the U.S. this is not and has not been done in quite some time.;)

Satellite could and does go out from time to time, but all those programs are on your stateroom TV.
