What to do in Ancona?

Any suggestions for this port, please? Not much information on these boards, so if anyone has visited, what did you do?

Thanks.

Ancona is quite an attractive city. It's fairly low key, and not too touristy. You can:

  • See Trajan's Arch, in the port itself
  • Have a delicious seafood lunch
  • Take a ship's tour to Urbino if they offer one
  • Wander around the city and shop, people watch, look inside the churches and museums
  • Visit the park or beaches at Monte Conero with a hire car

Thank you. It's our first port after 3 days in Venice so low key will be good!

On Sundays (the only day of the week that a cruise ship is in town) The city offers a hop on/off tour for only 3 Euro per person. The first tour starts at 9.30 AM at the cruise terminal and from there on every 45 minutes. Last bus is at 13.10. Get off at the the Duomo, for some spectacular views, or at the Passeto for more stunning views of the sea at the other side of town. Ancona is shaped as an elbow which is Ankon, being the old greek name of the town.

There is no narration on the bus, but clear maps are provided at the cruise terminal. :)

Sounds good! We sail Seabourn. We are doing the Adriatic next month, Venice to Venice for 10 nights and are really looking forward to it. Happy planning, and I hope you have a fantastic cruise.

  • 3 years later...

I disagree with posters that Ancona has much of anything to see. Our ship stopped there in Sept. and the stores didn't even open until 3 pm! Instead we had arranged a visit to a winery 45 min. away called Antica Cantina Sant'Amico. They picked us up near the port (taxis would have been a lot more than they charged). The winery is run by a young woman (4th generation) who speaks perfect English. We toured the estate, which was surprisingly interesting, and had very generous wine tastings, along with lots of sliced meats and cheeses. The people were very warm and welcoming and I'd highly recommend it.

We visited Ancona on Friday 30th September, off MSC Sinfonia. We found it a charming town with lots of quaint streets and churches. We walked along the street parallel to the port and up to Piazza de Plebiscito and from there uphill towards the Cathedral de S. Ciriaco which is quite a climb, passing a Roman amphitheatre. On the way back down we passed the museum where a Caravaggio has just gone on display(reduced rate €8 for cruise ship passengers). We walked up a pedestrianised street of high end shops to a market. Had it not been so warm, we would have entered the park, Parc del Cardeto, near the Pharo, lighthouse, and walked by the other shore. All in all, a surprisingly pleasant stop.

We dropped a rental car in Ancona on our way to catch the ferry to Croatia.

Our suggestion would be to rent a car and tour the area. There are some nice villages nearby. Make sure that you reserve ahead of time. When we returned our car there was a couple trying to rent one. The walk in prices were triple what we were paying.

A Sunday arrival will be a challenge. In our experience just about all of the car rental locations are closed with the exception of airport locations.
