What does it mean if you know you are definitely riff raff, but you paid a Vantage fare?[/quote

It means you are riff raff but with plenty of money :) Make sure you let everyone know that you paid a vantage fare and are subsidising getaway cruisers who will be sure to curtsy when they meet you :) :)

Have a great cruise.

Dear me "Riff Raff" cruise snobbery is alive and well

We are 1 st time cruisers and took advantage of a great last min deal leaving on the 17th January on Oriana

We are well travelled having been to the Med,USA,Caribbean etc

I do agree that it can be annoying to hear of fellow passengers grabbing bargains but that happens in all holiday situations not JUST cruising

We took advantage of this great deal as we have often talked about taking a cruise and thought this was a great way of experiencing it

We just hope we don't meet to many people who have such a stuck up and narrow minded view of other passengers who have taken advantage of these deals, cruising is NOT just for the chosen few

I always book early when I want the six bedroom suite with the piano and it's own private staff of lackeys to run around after me.... Haha only kidding! The only reason we book so early is because we need to plan work and school etc. Can't wait to be able to have last minute holidays ... Of any sort!

Well just because we take advance of a great getaway deal(s) it does not make us riff raft, we are much younger than your seasoned p&o cruiser, however I believe we behave better than some of the coffin dodgers on board. We know how to form an orderly que, be polite and not hog the sun beds from dawn to dusk. We also spend well onboard at the shops/excursions/casino, all of which last time I checked make p & o money. Selling cabins is just one revenue stream for p & o.

As has been said time and time again, when you book something at a price, you must be happy that it meets your requirements, you can find everything cheaper in life if you look hard or wait long enough, just enjoy the cruise experience and having the ability to see some fantastic places.

That is a pretty awful initial comment, Cruise snobbery at its finest.

We have only done two cruises so far, The first, booked over a year in advance, a two week Caribbean on Ventura in a deluxe cabin at over £4000, On board we spent plenty of money in the restaurants, shops, Casino and the Spa, probably £6000 in total plus on shore spending money.

last year a workmate happened to mention he had seen a good deal on Queen Mary to Norway, The date didnt suit but it made me notice a getaway deal on Azura, Balcony cabin at £550 each. We booked at less than a months notice and had a fantastic weeks cruise.

I don't believe the difference in price makes us Snobs or drunken Chavs, Just able to take advantage of a great offer

There is no doubt that the Getaway fare is also bringing a new type of passenger to P&O, and one that may not be for the better. You used to think that with the cost it also kept , how shall I put this, the riff raff away. Not any more. If fares stay this low I predict it is only a matter of time before we start hearing of many passenger problems with drunkeness and disorderly behaviour becoming more prevalent.

Even if you have to plan well ahead as I do, you don't have to book well ahead.

I've identified a cruise in Autumn 2014 we want to go on. I've kept my diary clear. I'll monitor getaway prices, and expect to book 6-3 weeks before. If it looks like selling out, I'll book earlier. If there's no sign, later. If it all suddenly goes sold, have an alternative cruise in reserve.

I agree, this is the exact same format I follow. I know when we want to go and follow the prices on a daily basis as we approach the departure date.

I love Getaway fares :D

As you can see we cruise quite a lot and I have to say that there is a load of tripe talked about the type of people who book getaways. In my experience the people who book getaways are the same as the ones who book vantage. Mainly retired and with the time on their hands to go on holiday at short notice.

The people who snap up the good deals are those in the know ie existing cruisers.

Those people who cruise with bald heads and tattoos are those who have more than likely paid full price. Although why on earth anyone would look down at anyone on a cruise ship beats me.

That any group in society are only cruising because of getaway fares is a complete Joke

If hair loss was a factor, the ships would sail half empty.:D:D

Having cruised well over 20 times, I am pleased to report that every one was a bargain and long may they continue ! My wife and I don't care if it is a junior suite or an inside if the price is right. I feel sorry for people who pay what I consider well over the odds because they are no computer savvy. On our last cruise in November 13 our table companions had paid £1350 each for the same class of cabin as us at £450 each, I didn't spoil there holiday by telling them.

  • 2 weeks later...

People have to be happy with what they get for what they pay. I have booked a cruise well in advance and been able to guarantee the dining option I wanted and get the cabin choice. It suited me to do that even though I knew that there would be some who get a getaway fare far cheaper ...... good luck to them. I have also cruised on a getaway basis. The problem occurs when crass people feel the need to brag to all and sundry how cheap they managed to get their cruise for.

I agree with you we always book early cruise or land based I'm not interested what enyone else pays I could not be bothered with worrying about what the next person paid ,if I'm happy with the price I pay ,it if not I don't I would never get involved with people on the cruise discussing what they paid all this moaning about the prices is tiresome just go on your cruise and enjoy it no matter what you payed .

Absolutely 100% agree with everything you said. We have done exactly the same. Paid nearly £5,000 for Panama Canal cruise and like you got a nice deal to Norway last year on a Getaway. We are older people from Surrey and certainly not riff-raff.. Just sensible enough to take advantage of the sale price. I wonder if the OP would class anyone who purchases, let's say a coats from John Lews, in the sales after Christmas as riff-raff too.......

It's what it is!! We paid £1400 for a Caribbean cruise in March 13 and thought we had a bargain, whilst on board we heard the braggers saying they paid less than £1000 on the last minute.

So thought we would try a last minute deal later in the year when we saw another Caribbean cruise at £999 in December for another inside cabin we went for it - why not.

A week later we saw they were offering the same for a balcony cabin, so contacted the CEO to see if we could upgrade they explained that normally we would have to pay the amount they were offering a balcony at the time of booking which was £1400 but they were willing to offer us a balcony cabin for £100 so we gratefully accepted the offer and what was even better was they never charged us the £100. That £100 was passed on to the fantastic staff as tips because they were the ones who made a big contribution to making out holiday another fantastic experience with P & O.

I don't class us as chavs, we don't have tattoos, my partner is a bit bald though, we are just normal working class folk that have to live on a budget, so when a bargain pops up we take advantage but the last thing we do is brag to others who have paid more because they chose to book early, I respect my fellow cruisers and teat them like I like to be treated myself.

I live in the North West of England too, Does that count against me:D

Funnily enough, the only example of what I would call drunken loutishness we have witnessed came from a very well spoken and obviously wealthy chap in the casino, Very drunk on red wine and became very unpleasant to the staff after losing £800 in about half an hour!! He called the pit boss and demanded that the croupier be replaced because he had an attitude problem!! LOL

If I ever begin discussing how much I paid for any cruise or holiday, I will be highly concerned at my skills of small talk.

Interesting comment, however, as a Yorkshireman, I think we all like to grab a bargain if we can, and I suspect that a lot of the comments about avoiding any discussions on how much or how little you paid for your cruise is to avoid the angst you would feel when you discovered you had overpaid on your P&O Vantage or select fare vs a late getaway or similar deal.

Unfortunately I doubt I will be on board any P&O ship in the immediate future to participate in such a discussion.

Because we need to book early to guarantee we get an accessible cabin, we have jumped ship to ensure that we are able to benefit from any price drops as a reduction in our booking cost, no excess OBC that we struggle to spend, and no subtle differences in the type of offer to avoid giving a reduction.

So our dinner discussions on Princess and Celebrity can avoid the topic altogether since everyone can have paid at most the last advertised price prior to final payment.

Simples.

But on Celebrity some people get their drinks thrown and some do not, so there is a difference there. This is just the same as some people getting extra OBC. You cannot get away from it.

I can't really say that I have checked the cost of my cruise since, the idea hadn't crossed my mind! I would not think to ask others how much they paid, and if someone dropped their cheaper price into conversation I would not be dismayed, just happy and perhaps a tiny bit jealous they had the flexibility in their lives to enjoy things such as last minute holidays. I am 22 but my job involves a number of responsibilities and commitments that restrict when I can travel - I would love to take a last minute holiday but unfortunately that is not feasible. Like you said, we all enjoy a bargain!

However, when we booked the cruise we were happy with the price we were paying. We were surprised to be offered additional OBC when we agreed to change to a different cruise due to changes to the disembarking port on our original cruise. Those credit card numbers would never have been inputted if I was not willing to pay the full balance without buyers remorse!

I am glad you have found an option that works for you :)
