Free Time in Lahaina

We are planning a 1:30 whale watching excursion and then attending the Old Lahaina Luau in the evening. Is there lots to do around Lahaina to pass the time between? If so, what kinds of things? I don't want to end up sitting there board waiting to go to the Luau. :o

There are many shops & restaurants in Lahaina & they've had free brochures for a historical walking tour. Lahaina (once called Lele) was the Hawaiian monarchy's capital & there are things like the small remains of the old fort, the old courthouse, the old jail & an 1800s missionary house are some of the historical locations.

From the back of the Wharf Cinema Center (across from the large banyan tree adjacent to the tender pier) is a public shuttle ($2?) that can take you a couple of miles to Ka'anapali Beach's Whaler's Village with more shops & dining options (Hula Grill's Barefoot Bar restaurant is one of our favorites).

They call the longest day of the year a "Lahaina Sun" which is an indication about how it can get hot in Lahaina. When you go to the OLL across the street is Maui's only air conditioned shopping mall.

I'm never bored in Lahaina & hopefully you'll have the same experience. :)

Some of the posters have mentioned this and even added some photos, but The Banyan Tree is the focal point of Lahaina.

And Lahaina was a whaling village and just walking it's streets is interesting. You will see sights and buildings from the old days.

These are just a few of the websites I found when I googled Old Lahaina Town. Lots to see and do, you won't have a problem filling in a full day.

We stayed a week on Maui and visited Lahaina almost every day. Have a great trip!
