Venice ban on cruise ships

Italy has so much great art, food, etc that tourists are unlikely to stop coming so off season is the best alternative.

We only go to Europe in the off season.

There is still much of Italy not overrun with tourists. We are planning a visit to the Piemonte area for 2015 and much of that area is off the radar of most tourists.

This year we are in Milan and Rapallo, also not big tourist destinations, though Liguria is quite popular with the Italians for their vacations. We avoid the CT when in this area as this has been overwhelmed with tourists carrying their Rick Steeves books - we were very disappointed when we were there in 2006 and I suspect it has gotten worse since then.

Caviargirl, we're visiting the same area of Italy in April, 2014, staying in a cliffside house in Zoagli, just 3 miles from Rapallo. Would love to hear your impressions from your trip upon your return at terryandmike (at) cox (dot) net, if you'd like to share.

I will be happy to email you upon our return.

I spent time in Rapallo about 8 years ago and just loved it. The visual beauty of the area, the great options of nearby places to explore, the lack of tourists overall (we were there in late September) - all made for a lovely visit.

That trip included a day in Le Spezia (after we bolted from the CT an hour after arriving), and a visit to SML and a brief stop in the overpriced town of Portofino. This trip we plan to see Camogli and Sestri Levante and possibly Lerici.
