Hurricane Dennis

Recommended Posts

There are worse places to be stranded than New Orleans. Coffee and beignets may taste all the better for the wind and rain. :) My folks leave tomorrow and we leave Sat morning. Not sure where we'll end up, but we'll have fun regardless. :)

Cheers,

Friday

It sounds like we are generally in agreement then. It's a person that is potentially in the way of a hurricane and has to take the appropriate precautions. The fact that the person is 19 really has little bearing on the issue.

Yeah, agreed. If this 19yo has lived in Mobile their whole life they should be pretty hurricane savvy by now. It's my belief that if anyone chooses to ride out a storm and not evacuate it's better to be with a group you know and trust than to be on your own no matter what the age. Besides, it's hard to have a hurricane party by yourself. :D

Just an FYI for everyone: I live in Auburn, AL. (4-hour drive from Mobile, 1 1/2 hour drive from Atlanta) and the hotels in our area are pretty much sold out. I remember Ivan last year....no damage here, but power outages all over the place! My plan...tomorrow after work, load up on groceries that don't need heat, buy batteries (oops...already have them!), do laundry, fill the car with gas, buy cat food and litter, make sure my little radio is working, charge up the cell phone, keep kitties inside, and batten down the hatches! Oh, yeah...and get out my favorite books to read by flashlight. Good luck, everyone!

Here in Mobile I've seen out of town power company trucks already staging here today and getting ready. Glad to see them on top of things this early. The worst part of a hurricane is being without power for a week or so. And my generator is screwed up and won't start. :( LOL Hope I don't need it.

I don't believe that Carnival has made any final decisions as of yet as to what they will do with the Ships affected by Dennis. There has been lots of talk but nothing firm yet. It's too soon. As Dennis' status is changing, so are the Cruise Lines decisions. They are obviously looking at worse case scenarios. We will probably hear more information tomorrow.

Anyone planning to come to NEW ORLEANS

If you Do Not have a reservation you need to call the hotels.

Our local news stations have advised us locals that all hotels are full. At 6p.m. tonight the closest hotels were Houston, Tx and Dallas, TX. They have also located available rooms in Arkansas.

Same thing happened last October. Florida, Mississippi, Alabama coastal residents head this way, therefore no rooms. Gaming Board will shut the casinos down in MS if the storm threatens them, therefore all casino hotels over on the MS coast will close and all those guests will head this way.

Last October was a real mess. Bumper to bumper and standstill traffic on interstates for 12 hours heading to Texas, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Hattisburg. It was not a pretty sight.

Please call ahead. It looks like we will not be in the path of Dennis but everyone will be coming here from east of us.

Best of luck to all with planned cruises.

Yikes! So those of us *with* reservations for Friday or Saturday nights - will it be a nightmare getting from the airport to the hotel? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Anything can happen. Right now there are no plans for our area to evacuate. You should be fine with traffic Fri/Sat. Just remember NOLA will be packed with people. Call your hotel and talk with them. For right now, all any of us can do is play the waiting game. Good luck.

Hi,

I am currently in Europe, and my son and nephew are on the Carnival Imagination. I understand they re routed to Coz from Grand Cayman, but I cant get any more info from Carnival as their website is worthless and their call center even more so.

Can any of you experienced with this line find out what the plans are for this ship in the next couple of days? They were supposed to disembark at Miami on Saturday the 9th, but in looking at the graphics of the storm track, I just dont see that happening. What are the possibilities?

Thanks in advance for any help and information that you can provide.

Jack

Has anyone heard anything about the Holiday leaving on Saturday? I don't see any problems, due to the fact that the Holiday should be way out of port by the time Dennis gets to the area, but rumors have it that the Mobile area may be evacuated. If so when will the evacuation begin, anyone know?

http://wpmi.com/weather/weatherwindow.aspx This is a way cool doppler radar you can download onto your puter. You have to register but it is well worth the trouble. (If you are on dial up you may want to run away now)

Here are some links that may help. You may have to register to view some. Hearing evac could begin today in some areas on a staggered basis to keep everyone from leaving at one time. Also hearing that track now looks like it "may" go east of Pensacola FL. Never can tell this far out.

Leaving on The Victory this Sunday July 10th. Flying into Miami tomorrow morning. I hope we can get in. We didn't book through Carnival and it's too far to walk from Dallas. Help! I NEED THIS CRUISE TO HAPPEN!!!!!!

Docked (Miracle) in Cozumel now... we received a note in our stateroom last night concerning the storm. It indicated that we would not be leaving Cozumel at 10 pm. We will leave at midnight. They indicate that another decision is soon to come regarding what happens after that (likely at the show tonight??). CCL did indicate that if you HAD to be in Tampa on Sunday, that you should fly out of Cozumel/Cancun today (meaning we WON'T be back to Tampa on Sunday).

Likely an extra day (or two  ) at sea... I would rather be back at work...really!

Looks like a shortened cruise (my guess) for the July 10th people. CCL will eventually come up with an option like FULL REFUND or discount off future cruise if you sail (w/onboard credit)...

We will update you, as we find out more...

Tom and Cheryl,

We too are from Tally. I just listened to CNN news and they actually mentioned Tallahassee as one of the areas that could experience hurricane 4 strength winds. I found that odd since it looks like the projected path still is at the Pensacola area, and even when Ivan hit last year we hardly had a breeze with rain. We have been so lucky in our little part of the world. I guess either way things can change quick thinking back and remembering Charlie.

thanks for your updates!

I am supposed to be on the Imagination tomorrow. I contacted Carnival, and from what they see, the ship left Cozumel last night @10pm and is currently en route to Miami
