Caribbean Princess - October 26th

Recommended Posts

We are sailing from New York to Houston on the Caribbean Princess on October 26th. We have never been to Texas and would like to go to San Antonio and see the Alamo. Since we aren't terribly adventerous drivers can anyone comment on how difficult a job it is to get from Houston to San Antonio by car? We read on Cruise Critic that Hertz had a rental counter right in the Bay Port cruise but when we called them they said that there wasn't one there.

Any travelling info that might help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I haven't done that particular drive, but see no problem with doing so! We drove from NJ to SanAntonio and no problem! We pretty much drive everywhere. San Antonio is a beautiful city and worth the trip.

We live just north of Austin. It is about a 3-1/2 hour drive between Galveston where ships used to dock and our home in Round Rock, including a break for a quick lunch. It should be about 3 hours now. The trip from Houston to San Antonio should be about equivalent, as the roads are somewhat parallel.

Going straight across I-10 from Houston to San Antonio is a straight shot with fairly good driving, taking the northern beltway toll road around Houston.

We have another person on our roll call who is also having difficulty getting a rental car. Enterprise is nearby to the Bayport terminal, but may involve a hefty one-way fee (see posts on our roll call).

Come join us on the roll call at this address:

Just keep in mind that the drive from Houston to San Antonio is a few hours.

It'll be over three hundred miles but a really easy drive, mostly on one highway, Interstate 10.

Stop at Buc-ee's on the way; they have the cleanest restrooms on Earth.

There are no rental places at the cruise terminal yet, none of anything as cruises haven't started up yet.

 Well, not quite 300 ;)

It's about 230 miles or so and will take about 3 1/2 hours to drive. I'm not sure where you can get a rental car, other than taking the cruise transport to Hobby airport (if such a thing exists) and picking one up there. It's kind of on the way, so you wouldn't lose much in the way of time/distance other than the time to get the car.

It's a very easy drive once you're out of Houston traffic, a nice straight shot down I-10.

Oh, and yes, do stop at Buc-ee's. It's in Luling, a bit closer to San Antonio than Houston.

  • 4 weeks later...

1. Stop at Bucees in Luling

2. Eat at City Market in Luling. Easily in the top 5 for BBQ in Texas. Cash only. They have odd hours. something like 8am-5:30pm. Only 2-3 miles off of I-10 http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Review/583-583/city-market

3. Speed limit is 75 on I-10, but beware of state police about 2 miles before you get to the Bucees exit
