Jules59 Posted September 12, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2013 Does anyone know where I can find a picture of a cruise ship from the 70's, and compare it to one of today's? Thanks, Jules59

f-mattox Posted September 12, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 12, 2013 Here are two photos of Princess ships in the 70s: the original Island Princess in Alaska in 1974; and the original Sun Princess in Acapulco in 1975;
Jules59 Posted September 12, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted September 12, 2013 I would love to see the 1975 sun princess in front of the new Royal princess. Just for comparison.
Fuzzyape Posted September 12, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 12, 2013 I guess the number of people that can afford to cruise has increased dramatically from the 70s. A good sign!

f-mattox Posted September 13, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 13, 2013 I would love to see the 1975 sun princess in front of the new Royal princess. Just for comparison. That would be quite a sight: 17,000 grt vs. 141,000 grt .
seacruise9 Posted September 13, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 13, 2013 Hi, Yes, it is amazing how much cruise ships have changed sinced the 1970s (I started cruising as a small child in 1967). In 2004, I was on a cruise on the Queen Mary 2 (148,000 tons) and we were docked near the original Pacific Princess (20,000 tons) (at the time, renamed simply Pacific and sailing for Pullmantur) in Martinique. The difference in size between the two ships was incredible. Chuck
ar1950 Posted September 13, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 13, 2013 Here are some links about the s/s Emerald Seas (and her sister ship) the ship that I was on for my first cruise back in 1978. Things have definitely changed since then. http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/ChandrisAtlantis.html http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/ChanAtlantisJPEGs/ChanAtlantis07EmSeas.jpg http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/ChanAtlantisJPEGs/ChanAtlantis03ct.jpg There is some interesting history and pictures about half way down on this link: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=105186&page=3 And one more picture: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1833824
Holomoku Posted September 13, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 13, 2013 Our first cruise was not until '95 and then on the Sky Princess. She was larger than the Princess small ships of today, and definitely larger than the Military transports that my wife took to Guam as a young girl and the freighter that I took from Yokohama to L.A. as a young man. The Sky Princess hooked us on Cruising. Great website, mahalo!:D

jeph Posted September 14, 2013 #15 Share Posted September 14, 2013 Maritime Matters frequently highlights the design features of ships gone by, and those that are still hanging on as ever-tighter safety regulations and fuel costs mean a final trip to the breakers can't be far off. jeph Posted September 15, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 15, 2013 ...a couple of my favorites: SHIP STYLE: Modernism & Modernity at Sea in the 20th Century (Philip Dawson & Bruce Peter) CRUISE: Identity, Design & Culture (Peter Quartermaine & Bruce Peter) That second book, incidentally, might also be thought of as part of an "Identity, Design and Culture" trilogy-- volumes were also produced about airlines and railways, all appealing to both travel buffs and transportation design buffs.
