LOUD NOISES ON NCL GEM 10th LEVEL

Don't post much but my wife and I were wondering if anyone has heard loud noises while in your cabin. We just sailed on 9/21/2013 cruise out of NYC on the NCL GEM. We had an inside cabin midship on the 10th level (we often book an inside so we can afford to sail more often, believe me we would rather be in a balcony cabin). Starting the first night we could hear noises that sounded like someone was going up or down a metal staircase. We would hear this noise on and off all night, so we were not getting a very good sleep. We reported this to the front desk on the 2nd night. They didn't think there were metal stairs, but they would report it to the crew manager. The next night the front dest called our room to tell us that there are metal stairs that the crew uses and that they were asked to try to keep the noise down. No luck, by the 5th night the noise seemed to have gotten louder. Oddly the front desk said they looked back 2 years and said there were no complaints on record. Hard to believed but.......

Other than this we had a great time on this cruise. The 3 production shows were maybe the best we have ever seen (we have sailed over 20 times, 4 on NCL). The live music in the bar lounges were all wonderful. Having "free" ice cream, 6-8 flavors each day in the Garden Cafe was a pleasant surprise.

I really try to watch out for crew areas, galleys and stuff like that when I book a room. Otherwise you get what you experienced. The problem is that most of those crew areas are just "white spaces" on deck plans and you don't know what's back there. Sorry you had that issue. I find it hard to believe that they've not gotten any complaints before. One of my worse sleeping cruises was on Disney when our room was under the galley area. All night you could hear them rolling things around upstairs.

Your right, I thought I picked a good location, no lounges, casino, or elevator...etc. The only unknown was the white space between the inside cabins. We even asked our cabin stewart if anyone said anything about this noise since he's been on the Gem. He said no.

We were in 10600 on the Gem in a balcony and there were times we heard loud noises... like banging echoing. We figured out towards the end it was the basketball court. And we heard that sometimes the staff played basketball late at night too. Maybe it was that?

I also pick my room by watching for white spaces. More than once Ive had to ask my PCC or come on here and search for whats in that space. Im a light sleeper, and I had one cruise with the loud bangs. I never want that again :p

I wish there were deck plans that showed whats in those white spaces. Even if its just generic for corporate espionage purposes. It could say "Room service storage" or "food storage". At least you could guess what and when activity will happen there.

If there was a site like seatguru for cruises, that would be awesome. Cruisedeckplans.com is a pretty good source of info tho. Lots of cabin reviews and photos. But not on the level of seatguru for mapping and problem highlights.

We were on the Gem Aug. 3rd to 10th, Cabin # 10107. Heard the noise almost every night - sounded like someone running up and down a metal ladder or banging on a 55 gal. drum!

The sounds woke up a couple of nights around 3 or 4 AM, but we went right back to sleep when we realized we were on vacation.:)

It didn't bother us enough to inquire or complain, but now I'm curious as to what the source of this noise could be.

I once had a cabin..sorry not sure # or ship ...on NCL opposite where they stored the chairs/stuff for art auctions--it was noisy during certain hours....:o I really did not think to look for those white spaces on deckplans.....BUT I do now...:)

In 1996, we were on the Carnival Destiny oceanview midship on the lowest passenger deck. We heard banging every night. When we inquired, we were told we were above the "Crew Bar" and were hearing the bass sounds from the music. They toned it down slightly, but since then we never book a cabin involving an unknown space above, below, or next to it. Lesson learned!

I checked the cabin numbers from our two cruises on the Gem this year, and we were in cabin #10107 in April where we heard absolutely no noise at night.

In August the cabin with the noise was #10569, which is where we experienced the nightly clanking.

Sorry about that.

Very interesting, pufnstuf. We were in cabin 10569 also!. One morning while walking from our cabin to the elevators we peeked into an open crew door and sure enough we spotted a metal stairway. We were told that these crew stairs are all over the ship and they are required to use them instead of the public stairs. Maybe room 10569 is lacking the proper sound insulation. NCL should address this problem.
