Taxi prices???

First, there's no way you can tour the entire country in a day. It has an area of 18,000 square miles, making it larger than the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands all combined. Stated another way, the country is about the size of South Carolina. Where is your cruise stopping? La Romana? Samana'? Your best bet is to go on a tour, either through the ship or an independent operator in the port where you're stopping. Google "Tours in (wherever the port is)" and you'll find lots of possibilities. My wife and I just spent a week on a land trip to a resort in Puerto Plata on the north coast, and I can tell you that unless you speak pretty fluent Spanish getting into a taxi can be a sometimes dodgy experience.
