Choosing between April or Sept to cruise?

There's really not much difference once you're in Hawaii - temperature is about the same all year round. Humidity and water temperature will both be a little higher in September, plus there is more of a chance of a hurricane in September, though it's still very remote.

We sailed to Hawaii from LA in April this year. sailing to the islands was mostly overcast and on the return journey but beautiful weather once we got there. the water may be warmer in September but it was warm enough for me to have a swim.

What about wild life......would you see more of one thing in Sept vs April?

If you're talking about humpback whales, neither month will be good viewing. The whale season in Hawaii is primarily mid-December through March. It's possible there could be a few still around in April, but not very likely. You can see schools of dolphins anytime, possibly smaller pilot whales, and lots of turtles near the shore and on beaches.
