KenMo Posted November 9, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 9, 2013 Nothing. It makes it too humid in the cabin for my taste.
kcwingwalker Posted November 9, 2013 #3 Share Posted November 9, 2013 Nothing. It makes it too humid in the cabin for my taste. Agree! And if you don't turn off the AC then you are wasting energy.
KPfromCT Posted November 9, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 9, 2013 We used the doorstop that the steward uses when he cleans the room. He/She leaves it near your cabin door/closet. Works better than the bungee cord. We propped ours open EVERY night, and it was AMAZING!!!:D No issues with humidity, just the sound of the ocean to put you to sleep. Enjoy!!!! bambidrummer Posted November 9, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted November 9, 2013 I live in Florida unless it is 100% humidity I don't mind.
KPfromCT Posted November 9, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 9, 2013 Agree! And if you don't turn off the AC then you are wasting energy. If the rumors are true, when the balcony door is open, the A/C shuts off automatically. Therefore, if that's true, we weren't wasting anything. Our steward knew we were doing it, and said NOTHING. Aplmac Posted November 9, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 9, 2013 WHY book an air-conditioned Carnival ship if what you really want is a schooner-type cruise ..low down to the sound of the ocean waves with lots of lovely sticky humidity and salt spray? You need to be booked on THIS --not Carnival! .
crusinpsychRN Posted November 9, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 9, 2013 No doorstop left in the cabin on Legend. When I asked for it I was told no can do. I wouldn't want to prop the balcony door b/c it'd get too hot in the cabin.
PortSideCruzan Posted November 9, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 9, 2013 (edited) I haven't kept a balcony door open on a cruise ship in many years. The last time I did some sort of crazy looking insect got in the cabin & my wife and I received a number of bites while sleeping. When we woke and located the thing I gave it a proper burial at sea. Edited November 9, 2013 by PortSideCruzan

Great reason to keep the door shut and not strain the aircon system needlessly! Sounds like you got a few mosquitoes in there. And you being tourist 'Fresh Blood' you were all yummy! lol Tropical mosquitoes recognize temperate-clime mammals: you taste different. . mayfair0325 Posted November 10, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 10, 2013 WHAT!! Ok, I'm thinking the difference of opinion on this must be due to times of year people are sailing. Trust me, I cant survive without a/c, and do have it on during the day! But we tend to sail in December, in the Carribean. Having that balcony door open is HEAVENLY!! (and this from someone who suffers night sweats!) Both DH and I swear we have never slept better than when being on a ship with balcony door propped open! (of course a/c is turned off, not sure if it turns off on its own) Love love love that cool ocean breeze and the sound of the ocean and the hum and rocking of the ship. Puts me out like a baby! Or maybe that's all the DOD's...HA!!

Agree, I'm sure the people further down the A/C line don't mind their room temperature much warmer than is comfortable because people want to hear the waves! How do you hear the waves when you're asleep anyway? KEEP YOUR BALCONY DOORS CLOSED PEOPLE![/U]
State Room Posted November 10, 2013 #14 Share Posted November 10, 2013 The generators will be running full speed 24/7 if your door is open or not, so don't worry about "wasting" energy. You paid a pretty penny for the cruise, so you enjoy it anyway you want and don't worry about the energy. It's going to be there anyway.

lilmizz Posted November 10, 2013 #17 Share Posted November 10, 2013 To each there own.. Let your Conscience be your guide :p.. I always prop mine open for about a hour at night and the air goes off. the breeze comes in and im in love with the ocean while im laying on my comfy bedding! Then the night air cools the room down even more and thats when you shut the door! So One hour, Perhaps not even that long.. Heaven
bambidrummer Posted November 10, 2013 Author #18 Share Posted November 10, 2013 The whole point to a balcony is to hear the ocean! I want the door open when I am in the cabin!
windandsun Posted November 10, 2013 #19 Share Posted November 10, 2013 What do you use to prop open the balcony door? We use a bungee cord .. it works well. You can pick them up at the dollar store. BTW, we've never had a problem with insects flying in or anything else. Our stewards have never said anything about us having the door open. Sleeping with the door open is one of the reasons we pay the extra for a balcony cabin. :)
benefactr Posted November 10, 2013 #20 Share Posted November 10, 2013 I was on the Valor week before last and it may have been out of the norm but the balcony door actually stayed opened on it's on. I just had to push it all of the way open and it remained opened. Unsure if someone with knowledge of the doors did this or what but it was nice. cv322 Posted November 10, 2013 #21 Share Posted November 10, 2013 Agree! And if you don't turn off the AC then you are wasting energy. Also agree...don't ruin everyone else's temperature in your corridor..

The whole point of booking a balcony cabin is to BE ON the balcony...not to hear the ocean while you're inside . And...not for nothin', but you can also HEAR the ocean when you're ON the balcony! Go figure! :D
CrusingGolfers Posted November 10, 2013 #23 Share Posted November 10, 2013 Nothing better than falling asleep to the ocean sounds. We usually use a bungee cord and it works great. We forgot one on one cruise and our room steward brought us one that she had. Amazing what $5 will do. Enjoy your cruise and enjoy the balcony door being open at night. Don't worry you paid plenty to "waste" the energy. Be careful if you open the cabin door though lol it will give the room service delivery person a rough morning. dougandmo Posted November 10, 2013 #24 Share Posted November 10, 2013 Unless the shipboard generators run wildly differently than other generators I've used the fuel consumption rate doesn't vary with the load on the generator. So energy waste is a non-issue. If there's an engineer with more advanced knowledge of the shipboard electrical generation feel free to correct me though. Now maybe you put more strain on the AC system, but that's not an energy waste issue.
Aplmac Posted November 10, 2013 #25 Share Posted November 10, 2013 The whole point to a balcony is to hear the ocean! I want the door open when I am in the cabin! You need to be sleeping out on your balcony, then....-with the door closed behind you. :) Then you'd properly be in touch with Nature. But... booked on Carnival, you're six decks up from the water. Those sailboat cruises get you much closer to that lapping sound you want. They even arrange for folks to sleep out on deck, and I'm not kidding you. You're booked on the wrong cruise-line! ;) .
