Black I suppose? Unless you are wearing a dark brown suit in which case it would be dark brown.

 

The perfectionists would say they must be patent leather but i just bought a pair of plain rip tape fastening ones. They are only worn on cruises and no tying :)

 

Technically black tie should be just that, no coloured parts of your outfit except the pocket square which can match your partners dress.

 

ps- don't wear a red cummerbund, it makes you look like a circus ringmaster :D

hahahahaha, that made me laugh :D

 

It also reminded me of the time we thought a white cummerbund would look good with a black dinner suit, black wing collar shirt and black and white bow tie...................... sooooooooooooooo wrong :confused:

 

It actually looked like a posh bandage :D and went straight in the bin!

Black tie is a euphemism for the less formal evening dress code of dinner suit and coloured bow tie, which may well be black but does not need to be. It distinguishes it from white tie, which requires tailcoats.

No ties with flashing lights though :D
