Current real world status of smoking onboard

We are non-smoking gamblers (craps & poker), and we are considering two different cruises over New Year's Eve:

1) Norwegian's EPIC

2) Royal Caribbean's ALLURE OF THE SEAS

Does either ship have a non-smoking casino?

Thanks In Advance!

Definitely not. The only line with no smoking in the casino is Celebrity.

just off of the Serenade last week. a group of us guys smoked cigars on 11 down the smoking hallway of the pool deck. lot of other smokers also smoking their cigs. everyone talked and had a good time. pool staff or ship officers who walked by took no notice. no problems getting drinks delivered. we would have the occasional walker that would wrinkle their nose or cough but I guess they couldn't read english or spanish as signs were clearly posted that they were entering the evil smoking area. I don't smoke in my house so smoking outside was not a hardship.

Both P&O and Thomson ships don't allow any indoor smoking at all, complying with UK law. P&O will be stopping all balcony smoking starting at various dates in 2014.

I was interested in a post by Bruce Muzz, which told us that any ship within the UK 12 mile limit isn't allowed smoking- on the bridge!

Windstar has a no smoking in doors policy, and there is one small (and out of the way) area on one deck at the rear of the ship where it is allowed. That said, their demographic doesn't seem to include many smokers. We were on two Windstar cruises and there was one smoker on one and two on the other. That's less than .01%. They were very polite smokers and never lit up anywhere but the designated area.

I think the demographics of your fellow cruisers will have as much bearing on your experience as the ship's policies will. Something to ponder.

I think you may be on to something. People with more wealth to spend generally gravitate towards the more upscale and luxury cruise lines, while people with lower incomes or families they are still supporting gravitate towards the lower priced lines. Statistics show the more educated and/or wealthy a person is, the less prone that person is to smoke. That could explain why the lines that have been slowest to enforce strict smoking policies are the budget and family lines such as Carnival and NCL.

While it's of course anecdotal, of my friends and acquaintances, the only ones who smoke are on the lower end of the income scale. I can't think of a single person in the top 75% income-wise of my social group who smokes. (Cuban cigars with after dinner Port not withstanding. ;) )

Pretty elitist sentiment.

I think it is a matter of common awareness and courtesy on both sides, smokers and not, including Cuban cigar smokers who on many ships are provided a nice indoor lounge/bar to indulge, and cigarette smokers are also allowed, low class though they may be.

To restate my original point, it's all about common awareness and courtesy.

No, it is statistical fact that wealthier individuals are less prone to smoke. Nothing elitist about simple facts.

Not on any Celebrity ship. The only place cigar smoking is allowed is in a section of the open air aft bar. No indoor smoking of any substance is allowed, including cigars.

Not elitist. Fact. The higher a persons net worth, the less likely they are to smoke cigarettes.

with cigs at $6 a pack and cigars at $12 and way up from there your low income friends must be doing OK. seemed to be a bunch of low income smokers on the SOS cruise a couple of weeks ago in the Med.

I didn't say they were low income, but lower income. Big difference. They aren't the ones smoking cigars, and I guarantee my friends who do smoke a cigar now and then are spending a lot more than $12 on them.

I suppose if most of my friends made say $250k+ a years and couple of the younger guys only made $150k I guess I could refer to them as lower income.

I'm talking about people who earn in the $30-50K range. While some of my friends do clear into the upper six and even into seven figures annually, they are the exception to the rule.
