whataboutport Posted December 25, 2013 #201 Share Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) The Houston Ship Channel leads to the Port of Houston which is the nation's largest port based on volume of cargo. Not just the CB, but all ships were held up due to fog, etc. on Saturday. I doubt the largest port in the nation (based on volume of cargo) is doomed. I'm sure the poster meant the port is doomed as far as cruise lines are concerned. It sat there vacant for years, and now in service has about a 50% success rate of being on time for embark/disembarkation. I was on the first 7 nt cruise out of Bayport. I keep reading all these threads about the delays and whatnot. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the ship and itinerary, I don't think I will ever sail out of Houston again bc of the risk. I like the shorter flight to TX vs FL but next time I will look into sailing out of Galveston. Yes I know Galveston is not immune to fog either, but doesn't have near as much trouble and not as far to go as far as long narrow channels are concerned. ETA: I think port of south LA is the busiest in the nation. Edited December 25, 2013 by whataboutport

Houston is first in tonnage, probably due to all the oil and chemicals that come in and go out.
MauiLvrs Posted December 25, 2013 #204 Share Posted December 25, 2013 A very long narrow channel and frequent fog and any wind is going to make the Captain think twice about that channel.... Don't think the captain has had much to say about it... The harbor folks seem to be the ones that have been closing it down.
