to fly TO Rome early and FROM Rio (after an extra night there)back to Toronto in 2011.

I requested the flights I wanted, used Lufthansa to Rome, and Delta from Rio to Atlanta, and Atlanta to Toronto.

If I recall, we paid an extra $150 on top of the deviation fee.

I paid the final payment a bit early, so I could contact Delta, and upgrade to Economy Plus for the Rio to Atlanta portion. We thought it was well worth the minimal extra fee.

We loved Rio, glad we stayed an extra day, after the one overnight on the ship.

It seems most flights to US/Canada leave at night, 2200 or so.

Gosh, I certainly hope it's better now, considering the traffic the Olympics will create...but our flight from Rio in 2007 was absolutely the worst airport experience we've ever had. The flights themselves, from Rio to Sao Paulo then on to Miami, were fine -- they were on American Airlines.

But, the airports were ridiculous. We disembarked in the morning with the flight due to depart at 8:15 pm. We opted to take Oceania's all-day tour to fill the time, with the luggage stored in the "basement" of the bus. It took us to Sugar Loaf, Ipanema Beach, a driving tour thru the city, and to a large, modern shopping center for lunch (on your own). The bus took us to the airport around 4:00 pm.

That's pretty early for an 8:15 flight, you say? The bus driver escorted us, with our luggage, into the terminal...and showed us the end of the check-in line. It went the entire width of the terminal, from one side to the other, then turned and went halfway back, to the desk. Everyone used the same line. It took over an hour and a half to move forward and get checked in. At the desk. they pointed to the security line...which was slower and therefore longer. By the time we got through security, they had already started the boarding for our flight. It took nearly 4 hours altogether.

Once on the plane, we took off and almost immediately started to descend. Sao Paulo was the Brazil hub in those days, with almost all international flights departing from there. We had to change planes. When we walked up the ramp we came to a glass door that led to the gate area. We could see our departure gate through the door, directly across from the door. Going through there, we would never have left the secure area. However, that door was locked and we had to walk down an separate corridor, exit the secure area, and go back through security again. Again, it was a lengthy process, and got us to the new gate barely in time for boarding. They must have had some reason to make us leave the secure gate area; there was a lot of joking in line that it was part of their employment program.

That was 6 years ago. As I said, I hope it has changed...

Check with American Airlines .We flew direct from JFK to Rio in Feb of 2013.I would assume they have a direct flight back to JFK from Rio.If you are usings O air ask for a deviation to fly directly home.

A friend just came back and said that the airports in Brazil have not improved one iota in their service. Rio's airport is one reason why I am not encouraged to go back to Rio again. We were just in Quito, Ecuador at their new airport and the rigamarole they put you through is something else. They randomly pick several passengers from a flight, drag you through hallways, down a pile of stairs, outside and then you are confronted with custom people that want to search through your suitcases. We asked why and no one would answer us in English. Someone finally took pity and said it was a random drug check, so we dutifully opened our suitcase. The guy was not too impressed as he hit the ones with the dirty clothes from our Amazon portion of the trip. Afterwards once I was on the plane, I could laugh about it, but I was quite annoyed at the time. They only picked on the non South American passengers. They expect you to sign forms without telling you what you are signing for. I was really uncomfortable about that and would not sign until they brought someone in who could speak English. Once I spoke to them in French, which is my very poor second language, they finally realized I do not speak Spanish. Spanish was not taught when I went to school.

We flew Rio-Miami-Toronto. Departed late at night. Airport a zoo as others have indicated. I would allow 6 hours for checkin so as not to be constantly stressing about missing the flight. Also, when we got to Miami, our flight to Toronto no longer existed. Had to be rebooked.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! One of our favourite cruises. (Lisbon-Rio)

mo,

did you pay for a deviation?

would gladly pay for a deviation , if I could first see what they are giving us without...

if you need to be at airport 6 hours prior, that takes care of doing any tours on the last day....

glad to hear you would still do the lisbon to rio even with the nighmare scenario....

We did the deviation. At first they wanted $300 extra. We refused. In the end we got the same flights we originally requested for no extra charge. We have never paid an up charge. Just keep going back and forth until we get something we can live with. ;-). Usually very good flights.

Since the flights leave somewhere between 2200-2400, you can still tour most of the day. We had a private guide.

You're making me want to book this cruise. Lol ! We were booked on Rome to Rio in 12 but traded it. Enjoy.

We flew from Rio to Atlanta February 23, 2013. It was one of the best flights we have ever been on. We flew on Delta, and left Rio at 10:30pm and arrived in Atlanta at 9:30am (10hrs 15min). When we got on the plane, they fed us a meal and then we went to sleep and before we knew it, they woke us up for breakfast and the we landed. If possible, I would recommend taking the flight at night, it is a no-brainier.

Enjoy

thank you so much for the recommends...now I just have to find out what kind of torture will be meted out for me by oceania with the flights...just dont understand paying for deviation, when we are travelling on the same day...we are not deviating ...just see it as a cash grab....

just cant see spending over 16 hours travelling from toronto to lisbon, when it is just a step hop across the atlantic...and all the stops from rio to get home...

Most people who deviate fly in a day or more early to get over jet lag & see some of the city

Or if you are in an area prone to bad weather in the winter months it just gives you an extra day incase the original flights are cancelled due to weather conditions

Also you might get flight (you can choose) that are non stop or a better routing for no upcharge

We are flying to MIA in Jan it is a short flight but in winter anything can happen so we have paid the deviation fee & going a day early

to each his own

oh yes we are also off to the carib in jan, so going a day early...always do that ...

but to lisbon in early nov....did not see the need...and back from rio to toronto no need to stay longer...

as far as I can see there are NO direct flights to lisbon...

but yes I understand ...why pay for a deviation unless you are changing the dates of flights...

Well you would not but if you are using the included air you get what they give you

You could just book your own then you can choose the carrier you want with the shortest more direct flights

It is a personal choice
