car rental after a cruise

Bad time of year to plan a trip - just too busy with other things. I searched a month ago but never found what I needed.

 

Instead of flying home right after our cruise, we decided to stay for a while and plan to rent a car. Haven't decided on a rental company yet, but do we have to go to the airport to rent one or is there an office at the port? We will come back to FLL to fly home so maybe the airport is the best choice. Do any of the companies have a shuttle. Thought about getting the car and then going back to port to pick up our friends and all our luggage.

 

We will be traveling with friends from out of the country who have a late afternoon flight so if we could get a car at the port, we would do something for the day with them and drop them off at the airport later in the day.

National/Alamo are the only ones offering a free shuttle to/from FLL. The others are all out of offices close to PE, with most of them having shuttles. Budget has a location just outside the Eisenhower/17th Street port entrance across the parking lot from the Renaissance Hotel; they have a shuttle as does Dollar and Thrifty.
