Hello all,

My DH and I have been visited Europe with the help of Rick Steves' guide books and it really suits us. We are independent travellers that don't like to wait for large groups. Does anyone know of a writer that is similar to Rick Steves? With RS, it tells you for example, how far is the train station from the port, if you can walk it, bus it or take a taxi with all prices, where to go for lunch, give you detailed walking tour etc. It's just a gem for travellers... I would LOVE to find a similar writer :confused:for Asia... Thank you

I wish Rick would branch out. He's in the middle east but shows no signs of venturing further.

For other places I use a combination of things: Lonely Planet has good maps. You can download the chapters you need.

I also rely heavily on Trip Advisor.

And for cruise ports check out http://cruiseportwiki.com/wiki.asp and http://tomsportguides.com/

For Southeast Asia check out http://www.travelfish.org/

I always check out each port, country, etc.tourism website. They give lots of info and further sites to look at.Also, ask for brochures they send free.I end up with so much info, have to really par it down.PS. this is another tip, when pressed and need specific info re.walking to site,or restarant.I llcall the toll free number of hotel in area and ask questions, have had lots of good info given to me that way.;)

Thank you for your replies.

I am planning a 24-day Asian cruise and I got about 12 books from different countries and different authors. Lonely Planet is by far my favorite (for Asia) but it doesn't come close to Rick Steves' style...

I guess there is room for a writer to start writing Asia travel books a la Rick Steves...

Thanks again for your input.
