Underwatr Posted January 6, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 6, 2014 IME a total loss of ship's power will mean departure may be delayed by hours (6 hours for us in Quebec City).
Immebsmom Posted January 6, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted January 6, 2014 Ok I think it is a power outage in the area (land). LA is big on air pollution controls and after an hour they fired up the engines and power came back on. Yeah!!! Appears this outage was NOT Carnivals fault!!! I don't think the ship gets any power from the port? Edited January 6, 2014 by tele-cruiser
WLHyatt Posted January 6, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 6, 2014 I doubt they do, I've never seen a power umbilical connected when ships are docked. They may have been performing some work related to the emergency power upgrades they have been doing. We may never know.
welldone60 Posted January 7, 2014 #12 Share Posted January 7, 2014 Yea, the ships that dock in Long Beach and San Pedro use dock power. Ships cannot run their engines while in port.
Underwatr Posted January 7, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 7, 2014 Pollution is lower if a ship connects to shore power. http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/TheBattery/archives/2013/09/12/study-on-shore-power-would-dramatically-reduce-cruise-ship-emissions I would not be surprised if it's policy to do so in LA. I think it is in New York.
WLHyatt Posted January 7, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks! I just learned a new thing. The only cruise ships I have seen up close on a dock are in NOLA, where they do not have those strict California rules.
SadieN Posted January 7, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 7, 2014 Yep, the Port of Los Angeles is one of the largest Green ports in the country. Most ships are plugged into shore. Just another reason why cruises out of LA are more expensive than almost anywhere else in the country. We also require special fuel. We also have noise control. Rare for a ship to blast it's horn in port. ** There have been odd power outages throughout the DWP area that are not wind related. Last night parts of the San Fernando Valley were out. welldone60 Posted January 7, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 7, 2014 Here is a link to article about Carnival in Long Beach. They have been using shore power for the past couple of years. http://www.csielectric.com/energy-featured-projects/ship-to-shore-power

The local tribes called the LA basin "Valley of the Smokes". Before the pollution controls you couldn't see the mountains less than a mile away for many continuous months of the year. These days we can't see the mountains once or twice a year. A HUGE improvement.
